Will Cates, Southwestern University, Baseball - Offensive Player of the Week (Week 7)

WILL CATES OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior outfielder from Cy Fair, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week for games played through Monday, March 23rd.

Cates led Southwestern to a huge 5-1 week including a win over the No. 2 team of the nation as well as a sweep against the University of Dallas to open SCAC play.

For the week, Cates went 15-for-26 at the plate, scoring 11 runs and driving in eight RBIs to go with two doubles and to homeruns. He also posted a .885 slugging percentage for the week. He also stole four bases on four attempts.

One of his biggest games came against No. 2 St. Thomas, where he finished 4-for-5 with a doubles, three RBIs, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. He followed that up with a monster weekend against Dallas, including a 3-for-5 day in the season finale, including a double, homer, four RBIs, and two runs scored.

For the season, Cates is second in the league in hitting, posting a .429 average thus far and is second in home runs (4). He leads the conference in slugging percentage (.667) as well as stolen bases (17). 

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior first baseman Todd Takabuki of Austin College had an outstanding weekend at the plate in the only two games the 'Roos were able to get in due to the rain, hitting .667 with a triple, a run, and two RBI. He also boasted a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .714 on base percentage. Freshman outfielder Khalen Simpson of Centenary led the Gents with a .500 clip at the dish in the four games this week as he tied for tops on the team in hits with six and RBI with four. He also tallied a hit in all four games during the week, including a pair of multi-hit performances against Schreiner. Junior first baseman Justin Law of Texas Lutheran was one of the most dangerous hitters in the TLU lineup, notching hits in all three games against Trinity. He ld the team with five hits and four runs and hit his first home run of his Bulldog career, ripping a solo shot in TLU's 10-2 win in the series finale. Junior infielder Colin Serkowski of Trinity hit .556 (5-9) in the weekend's three-game series against Texas Lutheran, picking up two runs and three RBI to pace the Tiger offense. Dallas and Schreiner did not nominate anyone.
