THOMAS HARWELL OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a senior right handed pitcher from Humble, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played through Sunday, March 8th.
Harwell pitched a gem to clinch the non-conference three game series over Southwestern on the road this past weekend.
Harwell tossed a complete game, allowing only one run on four hits and setting a new Texas Lutheran Division III-era record with 15 strikeouts in the win. His previous career-high was six strikeouts from earlier this year against Texas-Tyler.
Harwell came up big when it mattered most as he retired the final 10 batters of the game, striking out seven of them in the process.
For the season, Harwell is now 2-1 with a ERA of 3.86. He is third in the SCAC in strikeouts with 29 and fourth in the conference in strikeouts per game with 9.32.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior pitcher Holden Novak of Centenary pitched the Gents to a 15-2 victory, allowing one run on four hits in 5.2 innings pitched. He struck out six batters in the contest. Sophomore pitcher Ryan Hammonds of Dallas oed the bump in a seven-inning affair, and went the distance. He carried a shutout into the sixth inning, but a two-run frame was the only blemish and enough to drop UD and Hammonds in the decision. Freshman pitcher Riley Wayland of Southwestern made two appearances this week, throwing three innings and allowing no runs or hits in relief for Southwestern. 0.00 ERA while walking one and striking out one. Pitcher Ryan Gray, Chris Tate, Troy Nelson, and Taylor Hoesen combined to throw the Trinity's first no-hitter in nine years on Sunday afternoon at Schreiner University, leading the Tigers to a 10-2 victory. The quartet struck out 15 batters on their way to just the second combined no-hitter in school history. The last time multiple Trinity pitchers threw a no-hitter was in 1999, facing off against Carleton College. Austin College and Schreiner did not nominate anyone.
