SUWANEE, Ga. - Only seven programs in the
49-year history of the CAC/SCAC have put together 10+ year win
streaks of consecutive championships in any particular sport.
On October 30, 1999, running on the campus of Hendrix
College, the Rhodes College men captured their 10th
consecutive conference title at the SCAC Cross Country
championships, and that achievement is being
recognized as the Top Moment in the history of SCAC men's
cross country. Top 20 Moments homepage
In the third-closest finish in the history of the event, the Lynx
edged Trinity University by nine points and DePauw
University by 11 as head coach Robert Shankman earned his
ninth straight SCAC Men's Cross Country Coach-of-the-Year honor in
post-race voting.
The 1999 men's team title, which is the last won by the Rhodes men,
capped an incredible three years of tight finishes on the men's
side. Rhodes defeated Trinity by seven points in 1997 - the closest
men's finish in league history - and bested DePauw by eight
points in 1998. The 1998 race is the only time that the top two
teams have posted sub 50 point scores (39 to 47).
Russell Kramer, the SCAC Director of Communications/New Media, had
a chance to catch up with Rhodes College head coach Robert Shankman
to reflect on those 10 consecutive conference titles - that
culminated with the 1999 team's victory at Hendrix. Click to listen
