LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The 2019 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer season got under way last week with all nine teams in action, combining to post an opening weekend record of 10-6, highlighted by Austin College, Centenary, Southwestern, Texas Lutheran and Trinity all remaining unbeaten.
Austin College is off to its first 2-0 start since the 2014 season after picking up non-conference home victories against Wis.-Superior, 3-1, on Friday and Louisiana College, 1-0, on Sunday. Senior forward Lina Cruz scored a pair of goals against the Yellowjackets as the ‘Roos jumped out to a 3-0 lead before ultimately securing a two-goal victory to give Michele Housden a win in her coaching debut. Freshman Sarah Carmichael scored the game-winner on Sunday for her first collegiate goal and junior Maya Erwin collected two saves to secure her first shutout victory of the season.
Centenary is 2-0 for the second-straight season and the third time in the last four years after victories over LaGrange and Belhaven. In the opener, senior Migui Boldrin scored the lone goal for the Ladies and Karlie Delhommer posted five saves in a 1-0 shutout victory. Boldrin continued her outstanding weekend on Saturday, assisting on the opening goal and then scoring the double overtime winner in the 3-2 victory over the Blazers. Boldrin finished with two goals and one assists for five total points on the week.
Southwestern is 2-0 for the first time since the 2010 season following a pair of shutout victories over Sul Ross St., 2-0, last Friday and defeating St. Thomas, 1-0, in a designated non-conference matchup on Sunday. Senior Mary Cardone combined to make 12 saves to secure her first two shutouts of the season after posting eight last year as a junior. Sophomore Hallie Rutherford scored her sixth career goal in the opener against Sul Ross St., while senior defender Romie Reyna notched the game-winner against St. Thomas.
Texas Lutheran posted a win in its opener for the second-straight year after defeating St. Thomas last Friday, 1-0. The non-conference tilt versus TLU marked the inaugural contest for the Celts as a new member of the SCAC. Senior Bailey Nimtz converted on a penalty kick in the second half to give the Bulldogs the win. Freshman Krystal Pulaski made five saves in her collegiate debut to secure the shutout.
Despite having an outstanding record of 10-1-1 in its last 12 openers, Trinity posted its first win on opening day since 2016 with an impressive 4-0 victory over East Texas Baptist at home last Friday. Sophomore Madison Horner scored twice, including the game-winner, to lead the Tigers to victory. Trinity improved to 2-0 on Sunday following a 2-0 win over Sul Ross St. Sophomore Camryn Beall and freshman Anna-Kate Coker each scored as the Tigers have now opened the season with two-straight shutouts for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
Schreiner (1-1) head coach Alyssa Taramona earned a win in her coaching debut last Friday as the Moutaineers secured a 1-0 overtime victory against LeTourneau. Junior forward Payton Swieczkowski registered the golden goal in the 93rd minute of the match for the win.
SCAC action continues this week with all nine teams in action as Dallas, Johnson & Wales and St. Thomas all fight for their first win of the year.This Week's Results
