MARY CARDONE OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a senior goalkeeper from San Antonio, Texas, has been named the SCAC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games played through Sunday, November 3rd.
Cardone closed out the regular season by making 18 saves in three wins last week for the Pirates, including a pair of shutouts against Concordia (Tex.) and St. Thomas. Southwestern has now posted 10 shutouts on the year. Cardone was credited with five saves in the critical double overtime win against Centenary to help secure a bye and the number two seed going into the SCAC Tournament. She finished the regular season as the SCAC leader in save percentage (.881) and tied for second with 89 total saves.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior defender Kristen Canepa of Trinity helped her team pick up two more shutouts over the weekend in her final regular season match-ups of her career to bring the season total to 12 shutouts. Under her leadership, the Tigers have only given up eight goals this season, only one of which came in conference play. Trinity wraps up the regular season undefeated in SCAC action for the 11th consecutive season and picked up their 117th straight conference victory.
