KACI WELLIK OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior pitcher from Austin, Texas, has been named the SCAC Softball Pitcher of the Week for games played Monday, March 21st through Sunday March 27th.
Wellik led the Tiger softball team to a four-game SCAC series sweep of Schreiner University last weekend, earning a victory on both days of action.
Wellik started the series with a monster performance from the circle, recording 15 strikeouts in an 11-inning complete-game shutout victory. Her career-high 15 strikeouts is just one shy of the Trinity single-game record. Wellik allowed just seven hits over the 11 innings pitched, and she was also 1-3 at the plate. With a runner on second and no outs, Wellik executed a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the 11th set up the game-winning RBI.
In Saturday's opening game, Wellik continued her scoreless innings streak by 4.2 innings, and came within an out of recording back-to-back shutouts. She gave up five hits over five innings to earn the win. Wellik also scored three runs offensively, going 1-3 with a home run.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior pitcher Katie Lee of Dallas picked up four wins to tie the SCAC-lead with 10 overall, as the Lady Crusaders went 5-2 last week. Freshman pitcher Chandler Smith of Southwestern University fanned 10 in 16.1 innings of work last week. Senior pitcher Taylor Grissom of Texas Lutheran tossed a pair of complete-game shutouts in 8-0 and 3-0 SCAC wins against Centenary.
