LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – It was a light week in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball with several contests being postponed in response to the outbreak of COVID-19.
Texas Lutheran (19-1, 5-0) wrapped up its spring break trip to Arizona by posting wins over Baldwin Wallace (12-0), Bethany Lutheran (8-0) and Emory (4-2) in a rematch of last year’s National Championship showdown. The Bulldogs then swept Trinity at home last Saturday in an SCAC doubleheader to post a 5-0 record on the week. The opening victory against the Tigers was the 300th in the career for head coach Wade Wilson. Madisyn Cates and Chassety Raines combined to hit .500 from the plate (15-for-30) with seven RBI, nine runs scored, four stolen bases, two doubles, two triples and two walks to lead TLU. In the circle Kayla Oliveira and Ashlyn Strother each went 2-0 on the week. The due scattered just 15 hits in 21 innings of work, striking out 12, allowing just two earned runs and posting a 0.67 ERA.
Before Trinity (7-12, 1-4) dropped two games at TLU over the weekend the Tigers wrapped up their spring break trip to Florida by splitting a pair of contests last Tuesday, falling to Mount Union and defeating Washington College, 3-2, in nine innings. Danielle Ruiz drove in the winning run in the top half of the ninth inning, while Marisa Mejia pitched eight strong innings with four strikeouts to get the win and Cat Patterson collected the save closing out the bottom half of the ninth with one strikeout.
Southwestern (14-5, 5-1) swept Concordia (TX) in a non-conference twinbill last Tuesday, taking the first game, 3-0, before closing out the series with a 14-5 victory. Lindsey Longuet was outstanding in the circle for the Pirates picking up the win in both contests. In 14 total innings, Longuet allowed just eight hits, allowed just one earned run and struck out 14 to bring her season total to 79 which leads the SCAC. Kathryn Dull went a perfect 3-for-3 with five RBI and two walks in game two to lead Southwestern.
Austin College (3-19, 0-6) dropped a pair of games against non-conference foe McMurry last Wednesday at home. Ashley Elliott and Aubri Dayle Smith each registered two RBI in the series.
Following a meeting of the league's President's Council, and in response to the outbreak of COVID-19, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) has made the decision to indefinitely suspend all regular season conference and non-conference competition effective Monday, March 16.
SCAC leadership will engage in discussions with the NCAA about any and all implications of a suspension in conference competition; specifically, the league will request support for an extra year for all spring sport student-athletes whose seasons were just canceled.
