LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball began its league portion of the 2020 schedule last week with six teams opening conference action, highlighted by Texas Lutheran and Schreiner each earning sweeps.

Texas Lutheran (11-0, 3-0) remained perfect on the season after sweeping Dallas (4-9, 0-3) last weekend to open up SCAC play for both teams. Kelly Jurden led the way for the Bulldogs at the plate, hitting .667 in the series (5-for-9) and scoring five runs. The junior also stole four bases and drove in one run. Jurden's first steal of the series was her 101st as a Bulldog, breaking the school record for career steals. In the circle, first-year right-hander Ashlyn Strother combined with fellow first-year right-hander Sydney Ouellette to toss the 29th no-hitter in school history. Strother went four innings in an 8-0 win Saturday over the Crusaders. Strother tossed four no-hit innings. She walked just one and struck out three in improving her season record to 4-0 in the circle.

Schreiner (7-8, 3-0) improved to 7-8 on the year after a perfect 5-0 week that included a twin bill sweep of non-conference opponent Howard Payne and sweeping the opening SCAC series of the year against Austin College (3-14, 0-3). Sophomore Bri Wodtke went 10-for-23 at the plate last week, with five RBI, six runs scored, two stolen bases and a double to lead the Mountaineers at the plate. Wodtke also pitched a perfect game in the circle in the 12-0 over the ‘Roos on Saturday, striking out eight of the 15 batters that she faced. Senior Hannah Ortiz was also outstanding in the circle for Schreiner, posting a perfect 3-0 record. In 16 total innings, Ortiz scattered just eight hits, allowed four runs, struck out 19 batters and posted a 1.75 ERA.

Southwestern (9-4, 2-1) went 3-2 last week, splitting a doubleheader against non-conference opponent Mary Hardin-Baylor and earning a 2-1 series win over Trinity (5-6, 1-2) in the conference opener for both teams. Kaitlynn Copher paced the Pirates at the plate going 10-for-17 (.588) with five RBI, four runs scored, two walks, a double and driving in the winning run in the seventh in the Pirates’ 4-3 win over UMHB last Wednesday. Lindsey Longuet went 3-0 in the circle for the Pirates, including a pair of wins over the Tigers. In 19 Innings, Longuet posted a 2.21 ERA with 19 strikeouts and allowed just 12 total hits. Trinity junior Brianna Pena hit .556 in the series with three RBI and junior Allie Holbrook picked up the lone win on the rubber for the Tigers.

Centenary (4-5) the lone SCAC team that did not open conference play last week split a twin bill with Mississippi University for Women, winning the opener, 6-3. In the win pitcher Zoe Lanier picked up the win and helped herself out by driving in a pair of runs as well.

SCAC Softball continues this week highlighted by Centenary opening league play against Dallas on Saturday and Texas Lutheran traveling to Arizona for the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
