LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball continued last week with all seven teams in action, highlighted by Centenary opening the SCAC portion of its schedule and Texas Lutheran and Trinity taking part in spring break tournaments in Arizona and Florida, respectively.
Texas Lutheran (14-1, 3-0) headed west to Arizona to take part in the prestigious NFCA Leadoff Classic, posting a 3-1 record with wins over Mary Washington (7-0), No. 5 Ill. Wesleyan (3-0) and Pacific Lutheran (12-0). The Bulldogs first loss of the season, which snapped a 19-game winning streak dating back to last year’s National Championship run, came against No. 8 Christopher Newport, 10-2. On the week, TLU was led at the plate by senior Cassie Roche who had a hit in each game, posting a .545 batting average (6-for-11) with four RBI, four stolen bases, three runs scored, a double and a .636 slugging percentage. Roche drove in two Bulldogs’ in the wins over Ill. Wesleyan and Pacific Lutheran. Ashlyn Strother picked up two wins and a save last week in three TLU victories. Strother struck out 12 batters, allowed just one walk and scattered five hits in 11 innings of work. She posted a 0.00 ERA for the week, dropping her season ERA to 0.66.
Schreiner (8-10, 3-0) picked up one of three games against non-conference opponent Concordia (TX) last week. The Mountaineers salvaged the series by defeating the Tornados in game three, 6-3, in eight innings. Schreiner scored in the top of the seventh to tie the game before plating three runs in the eighth to secure the win. Bri Wodtke went 2-for-3 at the plate with a two-run single in the eighth. Amanda Timmerman relieved Wodtke in the circle to earn the win, allowing just one hit and striking out two in 2.1 innings of work.
Southwestern (12-5, 5-1) opened the week with a non-conference loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor, but bounced back by sweeping Austin College (3-17, 0-6) in an SCAC series over the weekend. The Pirates topped the ‘Roos by scores of 8-0, 9-1, and 8-0. Senior Kaitlynn Copher continued her strong season at the plate, batting .500 on the week, with five RBI, five runs scored, three doubles, two stolen bases, one walk, a .528 on-base percentage and a .750 slugging percentage. In the circle senior Lindsey Longuet threw the first no-hitter of her collegiate career in the opener with 11 total strikeouts. Longuet now has 65 strikeouts on the season to lead the SCAC and carries a 1.43 ERA on the season.
Centenary (6-6, 2-1) opened up SCAC play last week by snatching a 2-1 series win over Dallas (5-11, 1-5) at home. The Ladies won the opening two contests on Saturday, 5-4, and 4-3 before the Crusaders won the Sunday showdown, 6-4 in eight innings. Centenary was paced at the plate by freshman Taylor Mayo who hit .273 (3-for-11) delivering a walk-off single in the first game and a walk-off sacrifice fly in game two. Mayo finished the weekend with three RBI, one run scored and a .273 slugging percentage. In Dallas’ win on Sunday, the Crusaders pounded out a season-high 13 hits, scoring one run in the top of the seventh to force extra innings before securing the win with a pair of runs in the eighth. The win snapped a nine-game losing streak. Karina Campo went 2-for-4 at dish with two RBI and got the win in the circle for the Crusaders.
Trinity (6-9, 1-2) headed to the Sunshine state for its spring break trip, posting a 1-3 record to start the tournament. The Tigers’ win came in the first game of the weekend, defeating Suffolk, 2-0, on Saturday. Emily Vaclavik and Addison Swofford each drove in a run, while Cat Patterson collected the win in the circle, striking out three and scattering five hits in 6.1 innings of work.
SCAC softball continues this week as Trinity and TLU both complete their spring break trips before conference play rolls on this weekend with Austin College hosting Centenary and the Bulldogs hosting the TU Tigers.
