LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball continued last week with all seven teams in action, highlighted by Texas Lutheran maintaining its perfect record to open the season and Southwestern securing three wins in four games to improve to 6-2 on the year.
Texas Lutheran (8-0) is perfect through its opening eight contests for the second time since the 2016 season after posting a pair of shutout victories over Whitworth last Saturday. The Bulldogs took the opening game, 5-0, before closing out the series with an 8-0 win in six innings. Sophomore Chassety Raines tossed a complete game shutout in the opener with five strikeouts and then got it done at the plate in game two, going 4-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base.
Southwestern has now won four of its last five contests after sweeping Our Lady of the Lake last Friday and splitting a twin bill against Div. II St. Edwards on Sunday. Against the Saints, the Pirates picked up a 7-0 shutout to open the series before securing the sweep with a 4-3 walk-off win in extra innings. After being clipped in the opener against St. Edwards, 2-1, the Pirated responded with a one-run win of their own, 3-2, to earn a series split. Tori Montemayor led the way for the Pirates at the plate going 5-for-11 (.455) in the four games with three RBI, two runs scored, a home run and a double.
Trinity (4-4) split a doubleheader with Whitworth last Sunday, falling in the opener before bouncing back to earn a 3-1 win in game two. Allie Holbrook picked up the win in the circle for the Tigers with a complete game performance, scattering six hits in seven innings, while striking out one. Sophomore Cat Patterson came through with the clutch hit in game two with a three-run double in the bottom half of the third inning.
Centenary (3-4) split a series with Jarvis Christian last week, losing game one, 4-2, before earning a 3-1 win in game two. Haley Campbell went 5-for-8 from the plate in the two contests, smashing two doubles, scoring three runs and swiping one base.
Dallas (4-6) and Austin College (3-9) each went 1-3 last weekend at the Millsaps Tournament in Jackson, Mississippi. The Crusaders defeated Millsaps in the opening game of the weekend, 4-3 as Annabel Anderson and Mackenzie Tano each recorded an RBI in the win. The 'Roos collected their win by defeating LaGrange, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon. Jaide Vidal, Aubri Dayle Smith and Taylor Levan all posted an RBI in the win.
Schreiner (2-8) went 1-3 on the week, losing both contests against Houston-Victoria last Tuesday and splitting a twin bill against Whitworth on Sunday. In the 8-4 win over Whitworth, the Mountaineers used a five run second and Melanie Castilla went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI to fuel the victory.
SCAC softball continues this week as the conference portion of the schedule gets underway when Texas Lutheran travels to Dallas, Austin College hosts Schreiner and Southwestern takes on Trinity in San Antonio.
