Tony Martinez, Austin College, Football

TONY MARTINEZ OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a senior offensive lineman on the 'Roos football  team, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending November 15, 2009.

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, and a captain on the Austin College football team, Martinez has worked tirelessly in the Sherman, Texas community.

His efforts include 50 hours working with the Susan G. Komen Foundation as well as over 50 hours with both Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels.

Martinez has put in over 100 hours of his personal time with the Salvation Army of Sherman and over 20 hours with working with the Sherman Animal Shelter as well as Special Olympics. He has also helped to orgranize a Community Park Clean-Up.

A member of the campus SAAC at Austin College, Martinez has also helped to organize a canned food drive for a local women's shelter and as served as a babysitter for kids at the Salvation Army.

Martinez's interest in athletics outside of campus are evident in his work as a volunteer coach for Little League Football (ages 10-13) and he has also helped to organize youth summer football leagues. In addition, Martinez has served as a strength and conditioning coach for disabled students as well as a tutor for junior high students.

For his many efforts in the community, Martinez has been honored as a winner of the American Way Award.
