Trevor Cobb, Colorado College, Men's Soccer

TREVOR COBB OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a senior from Corrales, N.M., who is a forward and team captain on the Tigers' men's soccer team, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending November 1, 2009.

Cobb coordinated the men's soccer team's collection of soccer apparel and equipment which was donated during their two-week training trip to Brazil this August. The Tigers conducted soccer clinics and distributed apparel, equipment and other items while working with the Favela Project, which uses the game of soccer to improve the lives of children in some of Brazil's poorest urban areas.

"It's hard to understand the power of the situation and how appreciative these people are of getting this gear until your actually there," Cobb said. "What's most important was seeing how much these kids need gear and the seeds that were planted to make it happen."

Because each member of the travel party was only able to take one bag, Cobb efforts have continued to make sure the rest of the donated goods find their way to Brazil and is working to put in place a permanent system for donating to the project.

Another one of Cobb's efforts was organizing the "Answer to Cancer" campus soccer tournament, along with the late Chris Quon, which was started two years ago as a fundraiser for cancer research. He plans to change the name to the "Chris Quon Memorial Tournament" and make a donation to a charity designated by his former teammates' family.

Cobb currently serves as co-chair of CC's Student-Athlete Advisory Council and is working to build relationships between the athletes and the community. One of his goals is to have every team commit to an ongoing community service project.

Cobb also led a New Student Orientation trip this fall at the at the Native American (NACA) College prep high school and middle school, conducting clinics based on soccer, but geared more to teach a healthy lifestyle and stress the importance of exercise and nutrition for a well-rounded life.
