Trinity Men Defeat Whitworth 3-0 to Open NCAA Tournament

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Trinity University rolled to a 3-0 win over Whitworth University Saturday evening to advance in the 2016 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament.

Trinity struck for the first time in the 35th minute after Todd Edwards sent in a corner kick that Brady Johnston struck perfectly to send it past the keeper. This goal was Johnston's second of the year, with his first coming in overtime of the SCAC Men's Soccer Championship to give Trinity the title.

The Tigers had to wait until the 71st minute before they could tally another score, as Ryan Hunter sent in a long ball with Kellen Reid and Daylon Gordon earning the assists. Edwards closed out the scoring in the 86th minute with a one touch goal off of a cross from Chris Madden on the right side.

The Tigers outshot Whitworth 30-9 in the game, with the majority of their shots coming in the first half. Goalkeeper Todd Whittaker made four major saves for Trinity, while the Pirates' keeper tallied 12. Trinity also held a 15-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Trinity will face the winner of Saturday's game between Chapman University and the University of Texas-Dallas.
