NEW ORLEANS -- The Colorado College women's cross country team is ranked No. 16 in the NCAA Division III preseason rankings, released today by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Earlier this week, the organization announced its preseason regional rankings and the Tigers earned the No. 2 spot in the West Region. Both preseason rankings are the highest in program history.

CC returns the nucleus of last year's squad that enjoyed a very successful 2015 campaign. The Tigers defended their SCAC title, Leah Wessler repeated as individual champion and a program-record three runners competed at the NCAA Division III National Championship in Oshkosh, Wisc.

"We are honored to be ranked so high this preseason," head coach Ted Castaneda said. "Our goal as a team is to finish in the top 3 in the West Region and qualify for the national meet. We need to work hard this season to justify our preseason rankings."

Colorado College opens the 2016 season this Friday, Sept. 2, at the UCCS "Rust Buster" meet, followed by its own Colorado College Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 10. Both events will be at Monument Valley Park in Colorado Springs.
