Victoria Romano, Millsaps College, Women's Soccer

VICTORIA ROMANO OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a senior outside hitter on the women's volleyball team who hails from Diamondhead, Miss., has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending November 7, 2010.

Romano, who was recently named the winner of the Halbrook Award as Outstanding Senior Female Student-Athlete, is an initiated member of Omicron Delta Kappa - a service leadership honor society.

She has been a four-year member of the Millsaps Student Body Association, and is currently President of the Speech and Debate Club and a representative on the Hall of Fame Selection Committee and Chi Omega Fraternity.

In the community, Romano as provided over 100 hours of service and community projects as both a participant and leader with Walton Elementary Mentoring Program, Brown Elementary Dr. Seuss Read-a-thon and Habitat for Humanity.

Other service/community projects over the last four years include Earth-tober Festival, Stewpot Ministires, Bethelem Center, Chi Olympics and Walk-for-a-Wish (benefiting the Make-A-Wish foundation), Mid-Town Service Day, United Way Fundraiser, Brown Elementary Tutoring, Kaboom!, Good Samaritan Center, and Footsteps in Hope 5K.

Romano has also spent numerous hours dedicated to Hurricante Katrina relief efforts, including an "alternative spring break" trip with eight other Millsaps students to provide relief in Waveland, Miss., and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. She also went with a group from Lagniappe Church to Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, Iowa in the summer of 2008 to assist in flood demolition and repair following the storms that ravaged that area.

The senior has also attended numerous leadership summits, including the Women's Confernece for Student Leaders at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. (2008) and the Southern Women in Public Service Summit in Atlanta, Ga. (2010).

Romano is the founder and chairperson of the Mississippi Young Women's Leadership Summit where she helped recruit 50-100 nine and tenth grade girls to attend a conference focused on empowering them to seek active participation in Mississippi public service. Areas of discussion included political office, community service, health/sports/self-esteem, academic study and continuing education and mentoring.
