MEREDITH
RANNEY OF
CENTRE COLLEGE, a junior women's
soccer player from Owensboro, Ky., has been selected the SCAC
Character & Community Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for
the week ending September 26, 2010.
When it comes to changing lives, Ranney certainly
help put a smile on many children who suffered from medical
illnesses and disabilities this past summer.
The junior spent the summer at The Center For Courageous Kids
in Scottsville, Ky., where she served as a camp counselor and was
in charge of all “Fun and Games Activities.”
A typical day consisted of Ranney creating the
“Fun and Games” curriculum and then administering it to
about 40 children. Over the course of the summer, she
worked with a variety of children with illnesses such as cancer,
downs syndrome, hemophilia, epilepsy, heart conditions, and sickle
cell anemia.
When asked what she took most from this camp,
Ranney said, "It was an amazing experience that
taught me that all kids just want to be treated like kids. They
want to play, laugh, and find friends like
them.”
As a result of this experience, Ranney has
concluded that she would like to go to physicians assistant school
and work in pediatrics.
