BRIANNA PENA OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a sophomore shortstop from La Porte, Texas, has been named the SCAC Softball Player of the Week for games played from Monday, March 4th through Sunday, March 10th.
Pena led the Tiger softball team to a weekend sweep at Austin College to start SCAC play. Pena hit .615 (8-for-13) with five doubles, four runs scored, and four RBI in the four contests. She began the weekend by going 2-4 with two doubles in Trinity's series-opening win. On the final day, Pena was red-hot at the plate, going 5-7 with three doubles in the two games.
Pena leads Trinity with a .487 average this season, collecting 19 hits in 39 at-bats. She also leads the team with nine total doubles and has scored a team-best 11 runs on the year. Pena brought her RBI total up to six with this weekend's action, and she is slugging .718 and holds a .500 on-base percentage to lead Trinity in both categories.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior infielder Wendy Gillet of Centenary helped the Ladies go 2-2 on the week, reaching base safely each of her first seven plate appearances last week. In total, Gillet batted .692 (9-for-13) with a .750 on base percentage, five RBI, three runs scored and four doubles. Despite being swept, senior Alyssa Maki of Schreiner batted .400 at the plate (6-for-15) with two home runs, four RBI, two stolen bases and three runs scored in the four-game set against Schreiner. Sophomore utility infielder Tori Montemayor of Southwestern came up with a game-tying two RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh to keep the Pirates alive and helped lead them to a four-game sweep of Schreiner. Freshman second baseman Casey Martin of Texas Lutheran hit .462 and reached base at a .500 clip in the Bulldogs' four-game SCAC sweep of Dallas. Martin scored a run in every game (scored two runs in the first and fourth contests) and had two hits in three of the four games. She also had a steal in three of the four contests and finished with one RBI.
