DePauw men retain lead while women take lead after day three of SCAC Championships

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - DePauw University finds itself leading both the men's and women's meets through the third day of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Swimming and Diving Championships. The men retained their day two lead while a strong performance in the women's 800 freestyle relay put the DePauw women in the lead. Official Championship Website

DePauw increased its lead over the Trinity University Tigers to 58 points. The Indiana Tigers currently sport 711 total points to the Texas Tigers' total of 653. Rounding out the top five is Centre College (third - 329 points), Colorado College (fourth - 294 points) and Sewanee: University of the South (fifth - 292 points). DePauw picked up top-5 finishes in six different races, including multiple top-5 finishes in two individual races (400 IM and 100 breast).

Trinity's Alex Miranda set an SCAC Championship record in the 400 IM. He posted a time of 4:02.71, good enough for a "B" cut. He broke the previous record, held by Ryan Van Der Kar, by over two full seconds.

A total of two SCAC records were set. Along with Miranda's record in the 400 IM, DePauw's 200 medley relay team of Steve Klabak, Matt Kukurugya, Brogan Runion and John Cook set a new SCAC standard by tallying a 1:33.12. The time was also good enough for a "B" cut time. Along with the records, men's swimmers earned 11 "B" cut times during the evening.

On the women's side, DePauw narrowly pulled ahead of Trinity with a strong performance in the 800 freestyle. The Tigers won the race with an NCAA "B" cut time of 7:49.77. They edged Trinity by a mere 0.73 seconds. Trinity also tallied a "B" cut time of 7:50.50. The relay helped the Indiana Tigers to a total of 590.5 points, just 4.5 points ahead of Trinity's 586.

The DePauw women's 800 freestyle relay posted an SCAC championship and SCAC open record of 7:49.77.

The top five women's teams include Centre (459 - third), Sewanee (285 - fourth) and Rhodes (271.5 - fifth). Complete women's team scores through Friday are available here.

Competition continues Saturday, February 20 at the Ralph R. Wright Natatorium on the campus of the University of Louisville with prelims at 10:30 a.m. Eastern followed by finals at 6:30 p.m. Eastern.
