Kirby Smith, Trinity University, Offensive Player of the Week (Week 4)

KIRBY SMITH OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a junior outside hitter from Pilot Point, Tx.,  has been named SCAC Volleyball Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 19th through Sunday, September 25th. 

Smith led Trinity's volleyball team to a 4-0 record at this weekend's SCAC Cross-Divisional Tournament, including a 3-1 win over third-ranked Colorado College.

Smith had a team-leading 56 kills in the four wins, topped off with a 16-kill performance against #3 Colorado. In that match, she also piled up 8 digs and a team-best 4 blocks.

Smith reached double digit kills in all four matches this weekend, including a double-double of 14 kills and 17 digs against hosting Austin College.

During the weekend, Smith hit .373 on 126 attacks (9 errors), and also hit better than .600 in the finale against Dallas - a .667 performance that featured 12 kills on 18 attempts and zero errors. Against Centenary, Smith hit .619 with 14 kills and one error on 21 attacks.

In addition to her offensive prowess, Smith was also second on the team with 39 total digs (3.00/set). For the season, Smith leads Trinity with 161 kills (3.29/set), and is tied for second on the team with 126 digs (2.57/set). 

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior middle blocker Rebekah Bowden of Austin College had a big week for the 'Roos at the SCAC Cross-Divisional, averaging 3.62 kills per set with a .429 hitting percentage as the 'Roos went 2-2. Senior outside hitter Kristin Fording of Texas Lutheran University averaged 3.77 kills and 4.1 points per game in the Bulldogs' 1-3 weekend of SCAC play. For the weekend, Fording recorded 49 kills, 50 digs, and 7 total blocks. Senior outside hitter Mairin Guilfoyle of the University of Dallas led the Crusaders with 57 kills over five matches last week, including 48 against four conference foes in the SCAC Cross-Divisional hosted at Austin College. The senior outside hitter logged consecutive 16-kill performances against Texas Lutheran and Southwestern. Senior outside hitter Abbe Holtze of Colorado College led the team with 55 kills, while adding 49 digs and 6 blocks over the week's matches. Holtze averaged a double-double over four matches with 13.75 kills and 12.25 digs a match. Junior right side hitter Kate Mitchell of Southwestern University  helped the Pirates defeat #3 Colorado College in straight sets to remain undefeated on the season at 17-0. Mitchell recorded an impressive .462 attack percentage against #3 Colorado College.
