Rebecca Hayes, Trinity University, Defensive Player of the Week (Week 6)

REBECCA HAYES OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a junior middle blocker from Boone, N.C., has been named SCAC Volleyball Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, October 3rd through Sunday, October 9th. 

Hayes led the Tigers to a 3-0 record at last weekend's SCAC Divisional Tournament, vaulting Trinity into a first-place tie in the conference standings.

For the weekend, Hayes led the team in blocks in all three matches, averaging 1.2 blocks per set. She posted a season-best nine blocks against third-ranked Southwestern, and was a major force in Trinity holding the Pirates to a hitting percentage of .089 in the match.

In addition to her defensive prowess, Hayes also hit .364 to aid the Tiger offense, averaging 2.3 kills per set, and posting hitting percentages above .550 in two of the three matches. She had zero errors in those matches, hitting .667 against Schreiner, and .563 against Texas Lutheran.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior libero Jessie Koster of the University of Dallas amassed 99 digs over three matches - averaging 9.0 digs per set - in the conference divisional. This included tying a career-high 48 digs in a 3-2 victory against Austin College. That is the second game in the past four that the senior libero has boasted that number. It ranks fifth in the all-time SCAC records for an individual dig total in a game. Koster entered the week as the reigning leader of NCAA DIII and SCAC in digs and digs-per-set. First-year defensive specialist Anna Gurolnick of Colorado College helped lead the Tigers to a 3-0 record during conference play and 3-1 record overall during the week. She led the team defensively with 76 digs and also had nine assists and three aces on the week. During conference play, Gurolnick averaged 23 digs per match after starting the week with seven digs and four assists against Division II Colorado Christian. Gurolnick earned a team-high 18 digs in a 3-0 win over Dallas, picked up a career-high 32 digs to lead CC in a 3-0 win over Austin, and had a a team-high 19 digs and three aces in a 3-0 victory of Centenary to finish the week. Senior outside hitter Kristin Fording of Texas Lutheran University collected a season-best 29 digs in a four-set loss to No. 3 Southwestern. She added 23 digs in a four-set win over Schreiner and 11 in a three-set loss to Trinity. Fording also recorded 34 kills, four total blocks and 36 total points scored. Junior defensive specialist Madi McVay of Austin College surpassed the 1,000 career dig mark over the course of last week, while also averaging 6.29 digs per set in four matches. In her three SCAC matches, McVay totaled 80 digs for an average of 7.27 per set, and also added five service aces for the week. Sophomore outside hitter Jamison Duck of Southwestern University averaged nearly 5.5 digs per set as the Pirates posted a 2-1 week at the second SCAC Group Divisional.
