Sophie Merrifield, Colorado College, Defensive Player of the Week (Week Five)

SOPHIE MERRIFIELD OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a senior defensive specialist from Fairfax, Ca has been named SCAC Volleyball Defenseive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Tuesday, September 29th through Sunday, October 4th.  

Merrifield anchored the Colorado College defense helping the Tigers beat two nationally ranked teams, while improving to 19-1 this season. Merrifield was named to the all-tournament team of the Pikes Peak Challenge after leading the team with 61 digs over the weekend.

The senior earned a team-high 28 digs in a 3-2 victory over No. 19 Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Merrifield picked up 12 digs to lead CC in the back row in a 3-0 sweep of No. 15 Elmhurst College. The defensive specialist finished the weekend with a team-best 21 digs in a 3-1 win against Cornell College. Merrifield needs only 34 more digs to break the all-time career dig record for Colorado College. 

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:

Senior defensive specialist Megan Dugie of Texas Lutheran University tallied 20, 21 and 21 digs in the Bulldogs' 2-1 weekend at the Trinity Fall Classic. Senior libero Rachel Fusselman of Austin College made history for Austin College, breaking the career record for digs in the team's first match of the weekend against Redlands. Sophomore middle blocker Rebecca Hayes of Trinity University averaged an outstanding 1.36 blocks/set over her 11 sets played. Junior libero Jessie Koster of the University of Dallas collected 26 digs in the lone match Dallas played versus Arlington Baptist College last week.
