ANDREW CELIO OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a senior goalkeeper from San Antonio, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for matches played Friday, August 29 through Monday, September 1.
Celio recorded a shutout against East Texas Baptist University in the ‘Roos double-overtime draw. In the game, he marked nine saves, holding off ETBU’s last second shot that would have given them the win.
Celio is now tied for most saves in the
conference over the first weekend of play, after finishing the 2013
season as the conference saves leader with just 75 in 12
matches.
Other outstanding performances in
the SCAC:
Junior
Jake Morrison of Centenary helped lead the Gents to a
season opening 5-3 win at East Texas Baptist ... Provided a stellar
backline for the Maroon and White in the victory.Senior defender James Bernard of
Dallas led a defense that allowed only 11
shots on goal over two matches on the week ... the Crusaders
blocked five shots, overall. Sophomore defender Jacob Buckley
of Southwestern did not start in either game, but came
off the bench to organize the backs and even initiated the offense
with his distribution. Senior goalkeeper Matt Cardone of
Trinity had nine saves over the weekend, allowing only
one goal over two games and recording a shutout. Colorado College, Schreiner and Texas Lutheran did not
nominate anyone.
