IAN DAVIS OF SCHREINER UNIVERSITY, a junior from Helotes, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending Sunday, April 13, 2014.
Davis is the unquestioned leader for Schreiner
men’s golf. His contributions are both on and off the course,
but his biggest impact may well be on the campus community and
could last well beyond graduation. This year,
Davis has been the driving inspiration behind the
creation of the Schreiner Sports Network, one of the first
totally-student run organizations to promote athletics events and
teams in the state of Texas. SSN put out its first web-based
edition just before the winter break and now does weekly highlights
and updates which are posted to YouTube and available on the
Schreiner Athletics website. Although the SSN staff has grown to
more than a dozen students, Davis is the do-everything cog that
makes it all work, performing most of the hands-on duties needed to
make the enterprise go.
A Communications Major with a desire to pursue a career either in
front of the camera or behind it, Davis has been
heavily involved with a number of other projects this year. He
continues to assist with the San Antonio Food Bank, helped
resurrect the Schreiner Faculty/Staff vs. Students softball game,
worked on the Turkey Trot 5K to benefit local charities. He has
volunteered to serve as a public address announcer for Schreiner
basketball and volleyball. He also recently worked to create an
“Around the Horn” sports knowledge contest and event on
campus to determine the most sports-savvy student on campus
(through SSN).
Davis, along with his family, have provided
financial support for the past five years as sponsors of a girl in
Ghana to help with the costs of her education and has kept in
contact with her over the years via the internet. He also recently
volunteered to work at the Valero Texas Open (PGA Tour) and the
2014 NCAA Final Four in Dallas.
All of these activities have made it tough on
Davis to stay sharp for the 17th-ranked SU
men’s golf team but he was a member of the travel team at the
2013 NCAA D-III National Championships, where the Mountaineers
finished 15th out of 41 teams. He was also a member of the
travel team for the 2013 Golfweek Invitational where Schreiner
finished eighth out of 18 of the top teams in the nation. His
leadership goes well beyond the course, as he is the team captain
again this year.
Davis earned President’s List distinction
last spring, and Dean’s List this past fall. He also was on
the Academic Honor Roll in both semesters of the 2011-12 season and
was part of the Team GPA Award winners for 2013.
