LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Week eight of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women's tennis season featured a national top-40 matchup between conference rivals No. 19 Trinity and No. 21 Southwestern.
No. 19 Trinity (7-5) did not drop a point against Division III opponents last week, earning victories over Wisconsin-Eau Claire and No. 21 Southwestern. The Tigers, however, were defeated, 7-2, in its final match of the week against Tyler Junior College. Trinity swept a short-handed Southwestern squad 9-0 as the no. 3 doubles and no. 5 and 6 singles matches were decided by walkover. In matches that were contests No. 1 doubles Zoe Kaffen/Mary Kaffen and No. 2 Andrea De Leon/Megan Flores each earned 8-4 victories. Trinity's Ashley Debauge and Southwestern's Mary Cardone were set to go to a third set at line one singles when Cardone withdrew due to injury. No. 2 Zoe Kaffen and No. 4 Hailey Fuerer notched straight-set victories while No. 3 De Leon came back from an early deficit to defeat Nina Elez in extra frames, 1-6, 6-4, 10-7. In the loss to Tyler Junior College, No. 3 doubles Francesca Canjar/De Leon and No. 6 singles Paulina Garcia each picked up points for the Tigers.
Earlier in the week, No. 21 Southwestern (12-2) downed Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 7-2. The Pirates earned a pair of points in the doubles competition as No. 1 Ester Bowers/Cecile Wilde and No. 2 Mary Cardone/Mariana Quetzeri took their matches 8-4 and 8-2, respectively. No. 1 singles Cardone, No. 2 Bowers, No. 4 Elez, No. 5 Wilde and No. 6 Meeshti Shethia each collected straight-set victories.
Colorado College (1-11) picked up its first win of the season with a 7-2 victory over Hastings but dropped a 5-0 decision to Seward Community College at the end of the week. In the win, No. 2 doubles Elise Chassman/Tess Rubin collected a 6-5 (7-1) win while No. 3 Gaby Jadotte/Lily Salzman made quick work of their competition, taking the match 6-1. The Tigers went on to win five points in the singles competition with No. 4 Chassman, No. 5 Salzman and No. 6 Carter Norfleet each downing competition in straight sets while No. 2 Annie Zlevor and No. 3 Simone Hall where forced into extra sets with Zlevor defeating Kelsey Flaherty 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-4) and Hall besting Megan Waterhouse 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).
Schreiner (7-7) posted a 1-3 record last week, earning a 6-3 win over Hardin-Simmons but falling to Wisonsin-Eau Claire and McMurry 8-1 and 7-2, respectively. No. 1 doubles pair Kara Miller/Katie Smith were undefeated last week, picking up points in all three matches for the Mountaineers, including the lone point in the 8-1 loss to Wis.-Eau Claire. In the win over Hardin-Simmons, doubles pair Lauren Stanley/Jennifer Garcia took line two in a hard fought 9-8 match. No. 2 singles Stanley, No. 3. Miller and No. 5 Marlee Davis each notched straight-set victories while No. 1 Garcia fell behind early against Maddie Hammond but battled back to snag the 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win.
Centenary (2-8) was defeated by the University of the Ozarks on Sunday as No. 6 London Todd collected the only point for the Ladies in the match.
In its lone match of the week, Texas Lutheran (4-4) dropped a 9-0 decision to Dallas Baptist on Friday.
The SCAC women's tennis schedule continues this week as a several conference teams go head-to-head.
