LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The final Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women's tennis squad made its 2019 debut last week as Austin College took the court for the first time this season.
No. 21 Trinity went 2-1 last week with wins over East Texas Baptist and No. 17 Washington (Mo.). The Tigers opened the weekend with a 9-0 sweep over ETBU. On Saturday against WashU 5-4, No.1 singles Caroline Kutach, Mo 2 Ashley DeBauge and No. 4 Hailey Feuer picked up wins in straight sets while No. 6 Mary Kaffen rallied back after dropping her first set to defeat Lisa Chionis. Doubles pair (No. 2) Kutach/Megan Flores secured the win for the Tigers, taking an 8-6 win over Brigett Hodge/Laurel Wanger. Later in the day, Trinity fell to Division I foe Incarnate Word.
Southwestern dropped its Friday contest to Washington (Mo.), but bounced back to defeat Schreiner and Sul Ross State on Saturday. Against WashU, No. 1 Singles Mary Cardone, No. 2 Esther Bowers and No. 6 Stephanie Bartusov won their respective matches. The Pirates went on to sweep both wins against Schreiner and Sul Ross State.
Schreiner earned a 5-0 victory over Sul Ross State. The Mountaineers did not drop a game in the match as No. 1 Jennifer Garcia and No. 3 Kate De Los Santos earned 6-0,6-0 wins in singles play while all three doubles pairs captured 8-0 sets.
Austin College opened its season with a pair of wins over LeTourneau and Centenary but fell to Millsaps on Sunday afternoon.
In its only match of the weekend, Texas Lutheran earned the 8-1 decision over Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Bulldogs won all of its singles matches with No. 1 M.P Hubert, No. 2 Madison Dyer, No. 3 Illeana Levy, No. 5 Madison Starr and No. 6 Kaitlyn Enloe earning straight set victories. Hubert and Dyer when on to take the No. 1 doubles match while Levy and Mary Eby won in the No. 2 slot.
The SCAC women’s tennis schedule continues on Saturday when Austin College, Schreiner and Southwestern host a slew of matches.
