SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Trinity University junior defender Roman Cano has been designated as the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Men's Player of the Week.
Earlier tabbed as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Defensive Player of the Week, the versatile Cano played an important role in the ninth-ranked Tigers' two SCAC victories last week. Trinity defeated Austin (TX) College 3-0 and Centenary (LA) College 6-0 in home matchups.
Cano scored his first goal as a Trinity Tiger, firing the ball into the net with 1:10 remaining in the opening half against Centenary. Interestingly, the goal took place at the nearby University of the Incarnate Word (TX), where Cano played last season. Cano later assisted on a goal in the early minutes of the second half. The game was moved to UIW's Benson Stadium because of wet field conditions on the Trinity campus.
A key member of Trinity's taut defense, Cano and his teammates posted their third straight shutout with the Centenary game in the books. Austin College and Centenary were permitted only six total shots and two on the mark.
The last Trinity men's player to receive the United Soccer Coaches (formerly National Soccer Coaches Association of America) Player of the Week accolades was Victor Araujo during the 2013 season.
Trinity is sporting an undefeated season with a 4-0-1 overall record and a 2-0-0 mark in conference play. The Tigers will host two home SCAC contests this weekend, starting with Colorado College at 7:00 p.m. Friday. A new member of the conference, Johnson & Wales (CO) University comes to campus for a noon game on Sunday.
