Women's Basketball Recap (Week 7) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - DePauw extended their SCAC home winning streak to 49 over the weekend with wins against Sewanee and Oglethorpe. The DU Tigers have now won seven straight games the longest such streak in the conference and stand atop the SCAC Eastern Division. Austin College has won six straight contests and sits atop the Western Division with a 4-1 SCAC record.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Austin College went 2-0 on the week, topping the University of Dallas 63-52 and Colorado College 65-60 to improve to 10-3 on the year, including 4-1 in conference play. Against Dallas the ‘Roos got 14 points from Kayla Redden, including 4-of-6 threes, and Katy Williams added 12 points and 15 boards. Amber Stafford handed out seven assists in the win, in which the ‘Roos also got 10 points off the bench from Kersti Marusich. Against CC, Williams scored 18 points and grabbed eight boards and Marusich had another big game coming off the bench, this time hitting for 17 points and adding six boards. Stafford had eight points and Spenser Cruikshank added 10 boards and two blocked shots in the win, which was the team’s 6th straight. Williams averaged a double-double for the week, scoring 15 points per game and adding 11.5 boards. This week the ‘Roos are home for the first time since December 4 when they take on Rhodes and Birmingham-Southern.

Birmingham-Southern went 0-2 this week on the road, losing to conference opponent Rhodes on Saturday, 78-74, and non-conference foe Rust College on Sunday, 74-70. Sophomore Erin Jackson led the Panthers against Rhodes with 19 points, shooting 6-of-7 from the field and 5-of-6 on three-pointers. Then on Sunday, junior Katelyn Wilson posted a career-high 23 points in the loss to Rust. Freshman Alex Adams led the team in rebounding with eight caroms on both days; she leads the team overall with 11.8 points and 6.3 rebounds a contest. Wilson isn’t far behind, averaging 10.5 points a game, while sophomore Sam Davidson leads with 2.6 assists a game and freshman Stephanie Stanley leads with 1.7 steals a game. BSC stays on the road this weekend, traveling to face Colorado College, Friday, and Austin College, Sunday.

Centre added a pair of SCAC wins over the weekend, easily handling both Oglethorpe and Sewanee to improve to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the SCAC. In the Colonels' 85-60 win over Oglethorpe, Centre raced out to a 45-26 lead at halftime en-route to it's eighth victory of the year. The Colonels led 53-27 at halftime of its 90-64 win over Sewanee for win number nine. Centre will travel to Millsaps and Hendrix this weekend for another pair of SCAC road games.

Alyssa Aldaz scored a career-high 32 points to lead Colorado College to a 74-67 victory over Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday. Aldaz made 13 of 20 shots from the floor and eight of 12 free throws. Her previous high was 16 points during CC’s 88-74 victory over Piedmont College on Nov. 22. Becky Luetjen recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds. She also dished out a career-high six assists. Collier Clegg had 12 points to reach double figures for the sixth time this season. Tigers overcame a 39-32 halftime deficit. Colorado College made only 21 of 72 field-goal attempts in their showdown with Austin College and came out on the short end of a 65-60 decision. Luetjen gave CC a 55-53 lead with 4:31 left to play, but the Tigers misfired 10 times in a dozen tries while being outscored 12-5 the rest of the way. Luetjen posted her fifth double-double for the Tigers, with 17 points and 18 rebounds. She also recorded four assists. Emily Wattman-Turner chipped in with 13 points and Aldaz had 12.

DePauw improved to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in the SCAC after wins over Sewanee (99-64) and Oglethorpe (81-54). With the wins, the Tigers extended their overall home win streak to 44 and their regular season streak (excluding NCAA postseason games) to 61. DePauw's streak of consecutive SCAC home wins has now reached 49 games. In the win over Sewanee, the Tigers shot a season-high 55.8 percent and equaled a school record with 31 assists. Sewanee held an early 8-5 lead, but DePauw went on a 25-3 run to take a 30-11 advantage. The Tigers took a 52-26 lead into the break and led by as many as 41 in the second half. Five Tigers scored in double figures led by Emily Marshall who matched a career-high with 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Katie Aldrich added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Jenna Fernandez finished with 14 as well. Lindsay Vandivier scored a career-best 12 and Lauren Goff added 11. Katie Mathews dished out seven assists and Kate Walker finished with five. DePauw held a 57-21 edge on the boards in the win. Aldrich established career highs with 23 points and 13 rebounds in the win over Oglethorpe. With the game tied at 3-3, DePauw scored the next 11 and led by as many as 25 on the way to a 49-26 halftime lead. The Tigers never trailed in the contest. Aldrich's career highs came in 23 minutes on 10-of-13 shooting from the floor. Brooke Osborne followed with 11 points and hit three three-pointers while Emily Marshall added 10 points and grabbed eight offensive rebounds. Oglethorpe outshot DePauw 42.2-40.2 percent, but the Tigers committed just 10 turnovers to the Stormy Petrels' 27. DePauw outrebounded Oglethorpe by a 49-26 margin and snagged 31 offensive rebounds. The Tigers held a 32-4 advantage in second-chance points and a 34-7 margin in points off turnovers. For the two games, the Tigers shot 47.8 percent and held the opponents to 36.7 percent shooting. The nation's leader in rebound margin outrebounded the two opponents, 106-47. Aldrich averaged 18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in an average of 19.5 minutes of the bench and shot 77.3 percent (17-22) from the field. Marshall also averaged a double-double of 15.0 points and 11.5 rebounds. Lindsay Vandivier averaged 10.0 points and hit 7-of-9 from the floor.

Hendrix picked up a pair of SCAC West Division victories over Trinity University, 57-51, on Friday evening and Southwestern University, 85-64, on Sunday afternoon. Hendrix is riding a three-game win streak and owns a 9-2 overall record and 4-1 conference mark, good for a two-way tie with Austin College for first in the West. Three pointers decided Friday’s game against Trinity as the Warriors drained six shots from behind the arc and the Tigers made just one. All other stats were neck-and-neck and Trinity even outshot Hendrix, 34 percent to 30.6 percent. Hendrix’s largest run of the opening 20 minutes was an 8-2 stretch that put the Warriors up 22-14 with 6:16 remaining. The Tigers stayed close and eventually clawed their deficit down to two points at the buzzer, 27-25. Hendrix scored 14 second-chance points off its 10 offensive rebounds in the first half. The Tigers led for the first five minutes of the final period, until Warriors’ senior guard Amanda Morris ignited a 12-2 run to put Hendrix back on top, 48-39, with 9:00 left in regulation. Morris picked her defenders pocket and went the other way for a fast-break layup and was fouled on the play to earn the old fashioned 3-point play. Byler capped off the game-changing run with her second 3-pointer of the game. Trinity would not go down without a fight and found itself trailing by just four points with 1:23 to go. The Tigers missed a pair of jumpers with under a minute to play and were forced to foul to stop the clock at 0:18. Byler knocked down the clutch free throws to put the game away at 57-51. Roane tied her career-high of 15 points and set a new career-high mark with eight rebounds to lead the Warriors. Byler was close behind with 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore guard Jordan Henderson added 11 points, while Morris dished out a game-best six assists and senior forward Chelsey White rejected five shots. Byler posted a game-high 21 points and the Warriors shot 34-for-41 from the charity stripe to take a dominant win over Southwestern. The Warriors scored 20 points off the bench, tallied 17 points off turnovers and was 19-for-20 from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes. Sunday’s game was foul heavy with both teams totaling 57 personals (30-Pirates, 27-Warriors) called. Byler recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 rebounds, while Roane tallied 12 points and dished out six assists. Sophomore guard Avery Roller scored 11 and was 3-for-3 from long range. Morris added a career-high nine assists to the mix.

Millsaps dropped a pair of conference games at The Hangar Dome over the weekend to fall to 0-14 overall and 0-5 in SCAC play. Friday night, the Majors held a 5-point halftime lead over visiting Southwestern University but gave up the lead in the closing minutes to fall, 66-59. Freshman Kristin Salmon scored a career-high 19 points in the loss.Millsaps again took a lead into halftime Saturday night against Trinity University, only to see the Tigers rally late and steal the victory, 62-58. Freshman Shante’ Mort on recorded her team-leading sixth double-double of the season finishing with 14 points and ten rebounds while Salmon added 14 points to lead Millsaps. The Majors close their 6-game homestand against conference opponents Centre College and DePauw University, January 15 and 17.

Oglethorpe lost two road SCAC contests this past weekend at Centre College and DePauw University. In the loss on Friday to the Colonels, Centre forced 36 Stormy Petrel turnovers en route to posting an 85-60 victory. Oglethorpe was lead by the play of freshman Riley Cerone who posted 19 points and connected on 4 of 8 shots from downtown to lead the Petrels in scoring in the tough road SCAC tilt. Fellow freshman Sarah Giles scored 8 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and blocked 3 shots while Katie Weeks recorded 12 points and 6 rebounds on the evening. In Sunday’s 84-51 loss at DePauw, the Tigers forced the Petrels into 27 turnovers and never trailed en route to notching an SCAC win. The Petrels shot the ball well enough on Sunday afternoon (19-45, 42%) but the Tigers did serious damage on the offensive boards, grabbing 31, and ultimately took a remarkable 37 more shots than Oglethorpe in the game. For the contest DePauw made 33 of 82 shots (40%) and outrebounded the Petrels 49-26 to win in convincing fashion. Freshman Riley Cerone was the offensive leader for Oglethorpe for the second straight game, scoring 13 points on 4 of 8 shooting from the field. Kaci Palmore netted 8 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the contest and Sarah Giles posted 8 points and 5 rebounds. Kelley Reeves made 2 of 4 attempts from beyond the 3-point stripe and recorded 8 points on the afternoon. With the result the Stormy Petrels are now 7-7 on the season and 2-3 in SCAC play. Oglethorpe is back in action this Friday at 6:00 p.m. when they face Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Rhodes held off a Birmingham Southern second half rally, for a 78-74 SCAC win at Mallory Gymnasium on Saturday, January 9th. Senior Becky Atnip hit two free throws with 10 seconds to play to seal the Lynx win. Atnip who finished with 18 points on the day, also became the 11th player in school history to eclipse the 1,000 point mark in women's basketball. The Lynx appeared to have the game in complete control leading 71-57 with 8 minutes to play. However, the Panthers went on a 17-4 run to cut the lead to 75-74 with just over a minute to play. Sophomore center Jenilee Pate knocked down a free throw to make it 76-74 with 50 seconds to play, before Atnip made the final two free throws to ice the game. Pate scored 18 points and senior guard Becca Clarin added 16 points and junior guard LaKeya McGill poured in 15 points to lead the Lynx to their fifth victory in their last six games. The Lynx improve to 8-5 overall and will host the University of Dallas on Tuesday, January 12th in Mallory Gymnasium.

Sewanee played at DePauw and Centre this weekend and took a pair of road losses. On the trip, Lauren Gulley averaged 16.5 points per game and leads the Tigers so far this year with 12.8 points per game. Gulley had an impressive 23 point outing for a season high in Sunday's game. The Tigers are 4-8 and 1-4 in the SCAC. They will play Southwestern and Trinity in Texas this weekend before hosting Colorado and Austin Colleges the following weekend.

Southwestern split SCAC conference action over the weekend to move to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference. The Pirates outlasted Millsaps College on Friday, winning 66-59 while shooting 51.1% from the floor and 43.8% beyond the arc. Fortunes flipped as Southwestern headed to Hendrix and fell behind early. SU was unable to recover due to turnovers and fell 85-64. Southwestern returns home to play host to Sewanee on Friday night and Oglethorpe on Saturday evening.

Trinity split a pair of SCAC road games this past weekend, defeating Millsaps 62-58 on Saturday to bounce back from Friday’s 51-57 loss to Hendrix. Trinity has now won 17 straight meetings against Millsaps, but stands just 4-3 against Hendrix since the 2006-07 season. The Tigers have lost each of the last two meetings against the Warriors. Trinity returns home this weekend to face off against Sewanee and Oglethorpe from the SCAC East Division. The Tigers were 2-1 last year against the two teams, with the only loss coming in the SCAC Tournament Final against Oglethorpe.
