SUWANEE, Ga. - With students in the thick of finals the SCAC saw a light schedule of games with just six teams in action this past week. Colorado College continued its winning streak as the CC Tigers traveled to Minnesota and picked up two road wins over Bethany Lutheran and Crown Colleges.
- AROUND THE SCAC -
Austin College was
off last week allowing students to focus on exams. The ‘Roos
now 5-3 on the season will return to action December 30th on the
road at LeTourneau.
Birmingham-Southern played only one game this
week, defeating in-state rival Huntingdon College 100-54, Sunday,
at home. Freshman Stephanie Stanley led the Panthers with 12
points, sophomore Laura Kneiss led with seven rebounds, and
freshman Alex Adams led with four assists. Overall it was a
balanced scoring effort, as Adams, junior Katelyn Wilson, and
sophomores Sam Davidson and Haley Stracener all scored nine points
apiece as well. BSC does not play again until Dec. 29, when they
travel to Atlanta to take on Emory University at 2 p.m. ET.
Centre was idle this past week taking time of as
students finished out the semester with finals. The Colonels will
return to action Tuesday against Mt. St. Joseph.
Sophomore guard Jordy Stephenson scored a career-high 18 points to
lead Colorado College to a 90-78 victory over
Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday. The Tigers improved to 6-1 by
winning their first road game of the season. Becky Luetjen scored
16 points, including the final seven of the first half as CC opened
up a 41-34 lead. Collier Clegg had 16 points to reach double
figures for the fourth time in seventh games, and Emily
Wattman-Turner added 11 points to give the Tigers four players with
more than 10 points. CC took control of the game by making 10 of 24
three-point shots, the most this season, and posting a 51-29
advantage on the boards. CC extended its winning streak to five
games with a 74-23 victory over Crown College on Sunday afternoon.
Eliese Hansberry led the Tigers with game highs of 16 points and 10
rebounds for her second double-double of the season and the 11th of
her career. The senior forward made five of seven field-goal
attempts for a season-high .714 shooting percentage. Stephenson
added 10 points to reach double figures for the second game in a
row and dished out a career-high four assists. CC improved to 7-1
overall and 2-0 on the road. It marks only the third time CC has
won five or more consecutive games since the 1989-90 team won nine
in a row en route to a 17-9 record. The 51-point margin of victory
was the largest since a 103-19 win over Johnson & Wales
University on Feb. 10, 2007, and the largest on the road since the
Tigers defeated JWU, 92-36, on Jan. 25, 2007, in Denver. Colorado
College plays host to the University of Sioux Falls next Saturday
in its final game before the New Year.
In the only game of the week, DePauw tied a school
record with 13 three-pointers including eight in the first half and
improved to 5-3 with a 90-44 win over Robert Morris
University-Springfield in the Tigers' home opener. The win was also
the Tigers' 40th straight at the Neal Fieldhouse and 57th straight
in the regular season. DePauw scored nine straight midway through
the first half to extend the early lead to 16 and finished the
opening half with a 13-0 run to enter the intermission with a 54-21
lead. Jenna Fernandez paced the Tigers with 19 points in just 16
minutes, while Lauren Goff added 18 on six three-pointers in only
12 minutes. Brooke Osborne matched a career high with 16 points and
established a career best with five assists. Emily Marshall hauled
down 12 rebounds in the win with eight on the offensive glass.
Hendrix took the week off as the semester wrapped
up with finals. The Warriors who are 4-1 on the season return to
action Thursday evening hosting conference foe Millsaps.
Millsaps is still
looking for its first win of the 2009-10 campaign after dropping a
71-52 decision to Louisiana College on Friday night. Junior Ronda
Webb got the Majors on the scoreboard first with a pair of free
throws, but that would be the only time Millsaps had a lead in the
contest. LC jumped out to a quick 18-6 advantage before freshman
Shante’ Morton ended the Lady Cats’ run with a tough
basket down low for the Majors en route to finishing with a
game-high 15 points. With the loss, the Majors fall to 0-7 on the
year and will be on the road this week with games at Rust and
Hendrix College.
Oglethorpe was off this past week. The 4-2 Petrels
are back in action this Thursday versus LaGrange and this Sunday
versus East Texas Baptist.
Sharwil Bell led all scorers with 19 points, as
Rhodes snapped a three game losing streak with a
91-78 win at Rust College, on December 10th in Holly Springs, MS.
All five Lynx starters scored in double figures as Rhodes improved
to 4-4 overall with the win. Bell pulled down a game high 11
rebounds to record her first double double as a Lynx. Sophomore
center Jenilee Pate added 16 points, senior guard Becky Atnip
scored 15 points, junior guard LaKeya McGill scored 14 points and
senior guard Becca Clarin added 10 points. Rhodes led 47-40 at half
and shot 50% from the field for the game. Atnip made a season high
5 three point field goals and Rhodes connected on 15 of 17 free
throws for the game. The Lynx will return to action this week
against Lawrence College on December 18th and the University of
Dallas on December 19th.
Covenant's women's basketball team hosted Sewanee
Tuesday evening and got out to a 45-36 lead before halftime. In the
second, Sewanee outscored the Scots 35-28, but Covenant held on for
the 73-71 lead. Lauren Gulley (Winchester, Tenn., Franklin County)
led Sewanee's effort with 20 points and nine rebounds in 22 minutes
of play. Senior Jamie Robinson (Ft. Worth,Texas, Ft. Worth Country
Day) had 15 points and Danielle Kabbes(Chesterfield, Mo., Villa
Duchesne) had 11. Kabbes also led the Tiger defense with five
steals and four blocks. Sewanee is now 2-5 and is 0-1 in the SCAC.
The next Tiger action will be at home December 30 against St.
Scholastica before hosting Rhodes and Birmingham-Southern January 1
and 3 in SCAC play.
Southwestern had an open week this week. They
return to action on Friday, December 18th at the Las Vegas Hoopla
where they will face Beloit College.
#8 Trinity is now ranked in the top 10 in both the
D3hoops.com and the WBCA national polls. The Tigers did not play
last week, but will return to action in the Trip Sports Las Vegas
Hoopla December 19-20. The Tigers will face Beloit College and the
University of Scranton at the tournament, which will mark the first
meeting between the teams during the SCAC era (since 1991-92).
Trinity returns home December 28-29 for the Trinity Texas
Challenge, hosting Mary Hardin-Baylor, UW-Stout, and
Bluffton.
