Field Hockey Recap (Week 8) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Rhodes and Centre will clash this Friday afternoon to break a tie atop the standings leaving the winner sitting in the drivers seat for the top seed at the SCAC Tournament in two weeks hosted by the Lynx in Memphis. Centre defeated Rhodes 2-1 earlier in the season handing the Lynx its first loss in SCAC regular season play since 2009.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Centre split a pair of non-conference matches last week, falling 7-3 at NCAA Division II Bellarmine on Thursday before returning home for a 6-1 Senior Day win over Transylvania. Against Bellarmine, the Colonels took the early lead when Alexis Hebert scored her first goal of the year by redirecting a Barbara Parks pass. Bellarmine scored the next three goals and took a 3-1 halftime lead, but Centre was able to pull even early in the second half on unassisted goals by Erin Bacon and Courtney Kuiper, the sixth of the season for each. Those scores would be the last of the evening for the Colonels, however, as Bellarmine scored three unanswered goals to pull away for the 7-3 win. Centre had a better result against Transylvania, outshooting the Pioneers 24-7 and getting out to a 6-0 lead before surrendering a late goal. Kuiper scored twice, giving her a team-high eight goals on the year, with Katy Meyer and Sydney White also contributing first half goals for a 4-0 halftime lead. Hebert and Parks added second half goals to push the lead out to 6-0.  Sarah Jessee and White had assists in the game, and Patty Cowley madde four saves. Centre returns to SCAC play this week, traveling to Rhodes for a matchup of first place team Friday before finishing the regular season Sunday at Hendrix.

Hendrix
lost to Rhodes 2-1 in SCAC action on Saturday at Warrior Field. The Warriors fall to 8-4 overall and 1-3 in the league with just two games to play in the regular season. After a pair of Kat Simpson goals in the 21st and 46th minutes for Rhodes, Hendrix answered with a goal in the 48th minute by junior defender Maggie DesPain, her eighth of the season. Freshman forward Erika Jasso was credited with the assist. Freshman keeper Betsy Kelly had five saves in goal and sophomore Jennifer Koller recorded two defensive saves and DesPain had one. The Warriors will end the season at home with Sewanee on Friday and Centre on Sunday.

Rhodes
split two games this past week. The Lynx fell 2-1 in a tough non conference contest against New Paltz State in Hartford, Connecticut on the campus of Trinity College on Monday. Rhodes did however rebound to defeat Hendrix 2-1 picking up it’s third conference win thanks to a pair of goals from Kat Simpson.

Sewanee
picked up a win during its lone contest of the week, Saturday. The Tigers outworked Transylvania in a 2-0 win at Tiger Field. In the contest senior forward Elise Landau fired in both Sewanee goals. In fact, Landau – the Tigers lone senior – has set a career high for points and goals in a season.
