Mary Cardone, Southwestern University, Defensive Player of the Week (Week 1)

MARY CARDONE OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a senior goalkeeper from San Antonio, Texas, has been named the SCAC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games played through Monday, September 2nd.

Cardone helped the Pirates begin their season with a 2-0 record for the first time since the 2012 season, posting two shutouts with a total of 12 saves. Cardone, who finished her junior year with eight shutouts, totaled eight saves against Sul Ross St. and four in the non-conference tilt against St. Thomas.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior goalkeeper Maya Erwin of Austin College to a 2-0 record last weekend, registering 135 scoreless minutes in goal. Erwin made a pair of saves in a shutout victory over Louisiana College, including a spectacular, full extension effort to punch a potential game-tying shot up and over the crossbar in the 78th minute of action. Sophomore defender Bella Probasco of Texas Lutheran played all 90 minutes in the 1-0 win over St. Thomas and held the St. Thomas center forward scoreless. Probasco was a huge reason TLU started the year with a shutout victory. Junior goalkeeper Paige Wallace of Trinity led the Tigers to a pair of shutouts to open the 2019 season last weekend. Wallace played just over 160 total minutes without allowing a goal, including her first solo shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over Sul Ross on Sunday. In that win over Sul Ross, Wallace recorded four saves, which is the most she has recorded since the end of the 2017 season.
