Trinity Edges Out Austin College in Final Minutes

IRVING, Texas – After celebrating their share of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season trophy, third-seeded Trinity University faced a tough No. 5 Austin College squad. It took every second of the allotted 40 minutes to earn the win, but the Tigers will advance to the semifinals tomorrow after defeating the ‘Roos 63-56.

The teams traded points through the first half, and Trinity took a 26-24 lead at the break. In the second half, Austin College began with a 19-12 run, getting out to a five-point lead, their largest of the game, with 11:11 remaining. The ‘Roos lead held for another five minutes, but the Tigers took over from there.

Leading the Tigers in scoring was senior Lauren Splawn and junior Anecia Richardson, who each put up 14 points. Senior Hannah Coley added 13 of her own to round out the double-digit scorers. Taylor Hollins came off the bench to grab a game-high eight rebounds, followed by Bryony Harris with seven. Caitlin Barrett led all players with four assists, while also grabbing three steals.

For the ‘Roos, Christina Kime led all players with 17 points, while teammate Kendall Heitmeier posted 16. Brianna Harvey pulled down seven boards the lead the ‘Roo defense. Chrissy Ray came off the bench to add five rebounds, while Kali Vittallo and Kime each grabbed four. Kime and Harvey eached dished out a team-high three assists in the game.

Trinity will take on No. 2 seed Texas Lutheran in Saturday’s second semifinal match-up. The last time to two teams played in the postseason was in the 2014 SCAC Championship game where TLU earned a bid to the NCAA tournament after hitting a buzzer-beater to defeat Trinity.
