DePauw Claims Second Straight SCAC Softball Championship

DePauw Claims Second Straight SCAC Softball Championship

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - The DePauw Tigers won the SCAC Softball Championship for the second straight season on Sunday afternoon, defeating Rhodes College 8-0 in five innings.

DePauw (26-7) opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first inning against Rhodes (29-11). The Lynx won three games yesterday to get to today's championship showdown between the top two teams in the SCAC East Division.

Those two runs were all that were needed for DePauw pitcher Megan Soultz. Soultz, who won all three games for DePauw in this tournament, pitched a one-hit shutout in today's championship game.

In the fourth inning, DePauw added two more runs to go ahead 4-0, then added four in the fifth to put the run-rule into effect. Four of the eight runs scored by DePauw were unearned.

Carolyn Bartlett was 2-2 with two runs and two RBI for DePauw, while Emma Minx also had a pair of hits. Kelly Schwerzler scored a pair of runs for the Tigers.

Kelli Zomer led off the game with a triple to right-center field for Rhodes, but was stranded there.

With the win, DePauw has earned the SCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs. As announced earlier this month, DePauw University will serve as a host for one of the Division III regional tournaments. The winners of each regional will advance to the Division III College World Series.
