BRANDON STEPHENS OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a senior defensive lineman from Cedar Park, Texas, has been named the SCAC Football Defensive Co-Player of the Week for games played Saturday, Novermber 5. Stephens shares this week's honor with Tyler Frisby of Southwestern University.
Stephens collected a career-best 6.5 tackles for loss and career-high 13 total tackles, and he also forced a fumble, recorded a sack and intercepted a pass in Saturday's 30-28 home loss to Austin College. He had nine solo tackles with four tackle assists, and added one sack for three yards.
Stephens now has 21.0 tackles for loss this season - good for second in the SCAC.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior linebacker Tyler Frisby of Southwestern University posted nine tackles, including 1.5 for loss, and he intercepted two passes in the Pirates' 20-7 win over Trinity that clinched the outright conference title. Frisby's first interception in the third quarter was returned 47 yards for a touchdown, giving the Bucs a 20-0 lead. The senior linebacker also picked off the final pass of the game. His third-quarter pick-six marked Southwestern's first interception return for a score since John Paul Schulze accomplished the feat against Austin College in 1948. Senior defensive lineman Luke Packard of Trinity led the Tigers' defensive efforts in a 20-7 SCAC loss at Southwestern on Saturday afternoon, breaking a 23-year-old Tiger record in the process. After allowing a touchdown on the opening drive of the game, Packard and the Trinity defense gave up just two field goals the rest of the game (the other touchdown was a defensive score by Southwestern). The Tigers closed the game by allowing just six yards over eight drives to keep the score within reach. Packard broke Trinity's single-season sacks record by recording a pair of sacks against the Pirates. He eclipsed the record of 12.5 sacks set by John Tobola during the 1993 season. Packard finished the game with eight total tackles - six solo stops, and 4.0 tackles for loss. Sophomore defensive back Jackson Townsend of Austin College had a big game in the 'Roos 30-28 victory over Texas Lutheran, recovering a fumble and making seven tackles. Townsend's biggest play helped secure the win, when with 14 seconds remaining he broke through the line on a cornerback blitz and sacked the TLU quarterback, pushing the Bulldogs out of field goal range.
