Hanberry was hired by the SCAC in 1995 as the league's sports information director. He was promoted to assistant commissioner in 2000, associate commissioner in 2005 and served as interim commissioner for six months before being named commissioner in June of 2008.

Hanberry is a member of the Division III Commissioner Association (DIIICA) and currently serves as chair of the Awards Committee. He previously served on the group's Executive Council in 2016-17 and 2017-18. Hanberry holds a B.B.A. degree from Oglethorpe University where he was a two-year starter on the Petrel basketball team for Coach Jack Berkshire. Hanberry was named team MVP his junior season and is still one of the school's all-time leaders for single-season field goal percentage, career field goal percentage and rebounds per game - both for a season and a career.

Prior to transferring to Oglethorpe, Hanberry was a two-year starter for Coach Lawrence Smithmier at Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, Mississippi. An All-State performer his sophomore season, Hanberry was inducted into the school's Athletics Hall of Fame in the fall of 2009.
