GARRETT WHITLEY OF SCHREINER UNIVERSITY, a junior left-handed pitcher on the baseball team from Dickinson, Texas, has been selected as the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning December 2.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Whitley is a Finance major and has been a vital part of the Mountaineers' baseball program the past two seasons. Last season, he made a team-high 13 starts, tossing 60.0 innings (second on the team) with 34 strikeouts.

Along with his work on the field, Garrett has made several contributions off it, also. Since arriving in Kerrville, Garrett has become involved in serving organizations such as the SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) and Big Brother/Big Sisters. At home in Dickinson, Garrett assists his church, Special Olympics, and Diamond Sports.

Some of the volunteer work that Garrett has been involved with has been can food drives, mentoring young athletes, and city park clean-up. He has been a regular on the Academic Honors list while at Schreiner.
