LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Josh Newman of Schreiner University, a senior on the Mountaineers Men’s tennis team, has been selected as the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning February 25.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics and serve their campus and community.

Newman is in his final season with the Schreiner University Men’s Tennis team. He is a Biology Health Science major with a Public Health minor from Rockwall, Texas.

As a member of the Schreiner University Men’s Tennis team, Josh has been involved with multiple initiatives in the community. He has volunteered with the local humane society to help walk the animals and to collect food, cleaning, and toy supplies. Newman also volunteered at both the Veterans Parade and Christmas Parade in Kerrville with the team.

Josh is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee on campus. Through his involvement with the student organization he has helped with the “Booksgiving Drive” for the Doyle School, “Donut Forget to Study”, Blue Santa, and “A Night to Shine”. Josh helped collect books to donate to the Doyle School in Kerrville, Texas to restock their student library during the “Booksgiving Drive”. The Doyle School is also the organization SAAC will donate over $500 to as their organization they selected to receive the funds from their SCAC Change for the Better fundraiser. “Donut forget to Study” is an event where SAAC gives out donut holes to wish students good luck during finals week. This fall the event was paired with the Macy’s Letter to Santa Make-A-Wish Drive, where for every letter written, Macy’s donates $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Josh volunteered with the Blue Santa event sponsored by the Kerrville Police Department to collect and provide clothing, food, and toys for families in need during the holidays. One of the most recent events Josh volunteered at was the Tim Tebow Foundation’s “A Night to Shine” Event, which is an unforgettable prom night experience that happens around the world for people with special needs. His favorite part of the night was when all of the Schreiner student-athletes were on the dance floor with their buddies.

Newman has also helped with the Rise Against Hunger on campus, the Mobile Food Bank in San Antonio, is the Chief Justice of the student-run Judicial Board, and was also the former president of the Medical Careers Club (MCC). This year, MCC participated in the Kerrville Fright Night event in the community.
