CLARK RIVERS OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior on the Tigers' men's tennis team, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning December 4, 2017.

The SCAC honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Rivers is highly respected by his teammates and by Tiger men’s tennis Head Coach Russell McMindes.

Rivers is from Tomball, Texas, and will graduate from Trinity in May 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in political science, with a minor in business administration. He has earned a slot on the SCAC Academic Honor Roll. After completing the business law class at Trinity, Rivers received certification from the National Association of State Boards of Accountability Center.

Earlier this fall, Rivers and his teammates made the trek to the Texas Gulf Coast to aid in relief efforts of people affected by Hurricane Harvey. As a resident of the Houston Metropolitan area, Rivers had seen much of the destruction and was eager to help. The Tiger team and coaches took truckloads of supplies to aid and had the massive task of clearing brush and trees from homes in Aransas Pass.

Rivers and the Tiger team participated in the “Boots on the Court” activity at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph. Organized by Trinity Hall of Famer Dick Stockton ‘72, the men’s and women’s tennis teams conducted tennis clinics at the historic Air Force base for members of the military and their families.

Rivers was the recipient of the team’s Jimmy Moses Tiger Award last spring, marking the second time he received the accolade. It is named after the late Jimmy Moses, who was a member of the Trinity men’s tennis team which first brought the program into national prominence. Moses and teammate John Newman advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 1959. The award “best exemplifies the character of a Trinity student-athlete on and off the tennis court.”

He also has extensive experience in the teaching of his chosen sport. Rivers was a junior player coach at the Giammalva Elite Tennis Academy in Houston. He also was a volunteer coach for the QuickStart Program for children age 10 and under. Rivers served as a high performance instructor at Murillo Tennis Academy in San Antonio.

During his high school days in Tomball, Rivers participated in the Memorial High School National Honor Society community outreach event. He also assisted in fundraising for Toys for Tots.
