JAMES HELZER OF CENTENARY COLLEGE, a freshman on the Gents' men's basketball team, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning November 13, 2017.

The SCAC honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Helzer is a business major at Centenary. Besides being a member of the Gents basketball team, earning a start in his first collegiate game, he was very involved in the Denton community and his high school. At Denton Calvary Academy, he helped teach basketball to youth through various camps, while he assisted the rest of his senior class in picking up trash in the local community.

Through his church, he would help the youth group raise money for an assortment of mission trips.

“James is a great young man,” explained first year Gents head coach Chris Dorsey. “He’s a glue guy to our program because he truly cares about his teammates, our campus, and the Shreveport community. James has the highest of character, and I am so thankful he is a part of the program. I am glad he got this honor as it is very well deserved.”
