DUSTIN MATHIS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF DALLAS, a freshman on the Crusaders’ men’s basketball team, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Athlete of the Week for the week beginning January 29, 2018.

The SCAC honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Mathis has a big heart for working with people and especially youth. This past summer Mathis assisted with the Lake Worth Spartans little league baseball team that was part of the Lake Worth Youth Association. He specialized in assistant coaching, and doing other jobs such as working in the concession stands.

“I am a very involved person and like to interact with people,” Mathis stated.

Mathis looks to carry his experience from this summer to UD, where he believes everyone should feel appreciated.

“Just helping out people and being a friendly face to people,” Mathis added. “Let people know that they are important.”

Mathis was able to share his passion for sports with the kids, and also received an appreciation for the game he is playing now.

“My favorite part was seeing the kids’ faces when they win, but even during the practices they were also having fun,” Mathis reflected. “It is a blessing to see someone with a smile on their face.”

Mathis has appeared in 14 games this season for the Crusaders, and brings that energy to the game when he is on the court.
