TREY WATMORE OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a senior on the Tigers' men's swimming and diving team, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning January 22, 2018.

The SCAC honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Watmore’s versatility and leadership skills have made him an important part of the Big Cats’ success throughout his four years at CC.

His ability to swim all four strokes made Watmore an obvious candidate to compete in the grueling 200- and 400-yard individual medley events, as well as the medley relays, and that is a challenge he readily accepted.

At the 2017 SCAC Swimming & Diving Champions, Watmore finished fifth in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:19.13 and helped the Tigers finish third in the team standings.

One of the keys to becoming competitive in all four strokes is the effective use of time management, both in practice and in competition, and Watmore applied those same techniques to his life outside the pool by effectively splitting his time between academics and campus involvement, and honing his medical skills in preparation for his post-graduate career.

In addition to being a two-time team captain, Watmore is a member of the college’s President’s Council, a group of students who serve in an advisory role to the President of the college and as ambassadors for the college.

Members of the President’s Council have the unique opportunity to make valuable connections with fellow students, faculty, staff, administrators, and distinguished visitors at Colorado College. The Council meets with the President and/or various college and community leaders at least once per block.

Watmore also is active in CC’s Health Professions Club, serving both as president and pre-physician’s assistant liaison.

He also volunteers in the Outpatient Surgery and Wound Care units at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, and is a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Instead of pursuing a degree in science, Watmore chose to major in Romance Languages, the academic equivalent of an individual medley.

A member of the Phi Sigma Iota International Foreign Language Society, he is fluent in both Spanish and French, has studied Italian and understands some Portuguese.

Watmore, who owns a 3.70 grade-point average, also minors in biochemistry.

His superior academic performance has led to three consecutive appearances on the SCAC Academic Honor Roll and he will become the ninth member of the men’s program to earn the distinction four times.

During the summer of 2017, Watmore combined his passions for medicine and language when he spent two months in Montevideo, Uruguay, as a fellow with the Atlantis Project. While at the Hospital Maciel, which is one of the oldest hospitals in Uruguay’s capital city, he shadowed doctors and helped them and other hospital employees improve their English skills.

While in South America, he also volunteered as a cancer research assistant at the Hospital Militar.

After graduating in May, Watmore plans to pursue a career in the medical field.
