JESSICA VARNER OF CENTENARY COLLEGE, a sophomore on the Ladies golf team, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Character and Community Female Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning May 12, 2017.

The SCAC honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Varner is an engineering major at Centenary. Besides being a member of the Ladies team, Varner is very active in the local community. In her time here at Centenary, Varner would help teach local kids about the sport of golf. She and the rest of the Centenary golf teams help a local golf course they practice at with routine maintenance.

With the campus, Varner volunteers for the Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day. This year, she helped clean a local church/community center in the local Shreveport community.

“Jessica is the true definition of working towards a goal,” said head coach Emlyn Aubrey. “Whether it’s in the classroom, on the golf course, or in community service, this young lady knows where she wants to get to and absolutely accomplishes it. Even in her mistakes, she admits them, fixes the situation immediately, and gets back to focusing on her goals. She is a complete leader.”

Athletically, Varner had a successful season on the links for Centenary. The 38th-ranked Varner won two tournaments in 2016-17, including the SCAC Championship to become the first Maroon and White golfer since Hal Sutton in 1979 and 1980 to win a conference championship.

For her successful 2016-17 season, Varner became the first Centenary golfer to be named SCAC Athlete of the Year.

Varner also won the Al Jones Memorial at UT Tyler September 26-27 – the first individual title for the Ladies in more than four years.
