MATTHEW DEVILLIER OF CENTENARY COLLEGE, a sophomore pitcher on the Gents' baseball team, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Character & Community Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the period beginning April 10, 2017.

The SCAC honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

“Matt is having a great year on the diamond, but it his character, selflessness, and sense of family and community that truly defines him,” said head coach Mike Diaz. “He is an outstanding ambassador for the college and the baseball program.”

Devillier, a communication major at Centenary, has been involved with Special Olympics for a decade with his family. With the baseball team, he has helped out at local elementary schools and also assisted at baseball camps for elementary-aged kids held during breaks at Shehee Stadium.

On the diamond, Devillier has nine wins thus far in 2017, which ties the Gents single-season record for victories and is three more than any other pitcher in the conference. He leads the nation in victories and leads the conference in complete games (three). Devillier also sits third in the SCAC in ERA (2.22) and fifth in strikeouts (45).

Devillier and the rest of the Centenary baseball team wraps up SCAC play this weekend with a three-game series at Southwestern. A series win guarantees the first seed in the Conference Tournament, while a sweep will give the Gents their second Regular Season Title in the past three seasons.
