CEDRIC AMBULO OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a senior on the men’s tennis team, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week beginning February 15, 2016

The SCAC honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

When you head into the tennis season with your hair dyed bright pink, some might think you’re making some sort of a statement. But Austin College men’s tennis player Cedric Ambulo will be making a much bigger statement with his hair later this spring, in a much more meaningful way: by shaving it all off in support of children’s cancer research.

Ambulo, a third year senior from Cedar Hill, Texas, will be doing exactly that for St. Baldrick’s Day. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer and community-run charity endeavoring to help find treatments for childhood cancer, and for each of the past few years, members of the Austin College community like Ambulo have been getting their heads shaved as part of the charity drive.

A physics major with a minor in math, Ambulo has been a standout both on and off the tennis courts and is set to graduate this spring. In addition to his work with St. Baldrick’s, Ambulo has also been an active role model and mentor for young tennis players in the Dallas Metroplex. Last year, he participated in NJTL, which not only taught young kids from the inner-city about tennis but also helped guide them in making smart life choices and bettering themselves away from the court.

Ambulo has also been actively involved with Austin College’s Great Day of Service throughout his time in Sherman, volunteering as a youth tennis coach while also serving as a site leader in an effort to clean up a local church and fix bicycles for underprivileged children.

A captain on the men’s tennis team, Ambulo also serves as a teacher’s assistant and a member of the Austin College Rotoract Club, and is the secretary for his campus Resident Hall Council.
