Goertz, a forward in her third season of contributing to the Mountaineers the hardwood, is even more versatile and involved off the court.  She's become especially involved in mentorship and peer advising, serving in those capacities with freshmen orientation this past year.  Her work mentoring freshmen included working with them as they took their IDST class in their first semester.  She continues in her role as a Schreiner Ambassador giving campus tours to prospective students.  She is a member of the Bookstore Advisory Committee and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as well as treasurer for Kappa Mu Epsilon (national math honor society) and a note taker for the Learning Support Services program on campus.  She is majoring in Math, has received numerous academic honors and is in her second year in the Probability Research Project.

The San Antonio, Texas native (Marshall HS) also does work for a non-profit organization called Street Knits in which volunteers knit winter weather wearable garments that are then shipped north to be given out to needy and homeless people in cold-weather climates - as well as the San Antonio Food Bank which distributes food to needy families throughout Kerr Country.

The Character & Community award, established prior to the 2009-10 academic year, is an effort by the SCAC to honor the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.
