Sewanee's Three Wins in Three Days Recognized as Top SCAC Field Hockey Moment

SUWANEE, Ga. - Over the course of a magical, three-day run Sewanee-The University of the South went from the fourth-seed in its own five-team conference tournament to securing an at-large berth into the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament.

Playing its third game in three days, Sewanee became SCAC field hockey champions with a 1-0 upset over second-seeded and host Centre College at the 2008 Field Hockey Championships. That impressive and improbable run through the tournament is being recognized as the Top Moment in the history of SCAC field hockey. Top 20 Moments homepage

The Tigers and Colonels fought through a scoreless first half, as both defenses set the tone early. Sewanee got the championship clinching goal from sophomore Caroline Carlin off of a penalty-corner with 14:28 to play.

It was the first-ever field hockey championship for Sewanee, who lost its two previous appearances in the SCAC championship match. The Tigers went on to drop its first-round NCAA match with Lynchburg - snapping an eight-game winning streak - and finished the 2008 season with a 14-7 mark.

To date, Sewanee remains the only school in SCAC field hockey history to play and win three matches in three days at the conference championship tournament.

Russell Kramer, the SCAC Director of Communications/New Media, had a chance to catch up with Sewanee head coach Jennifer Baldaccini as well as senior Caroline Carlin, who provided that game-winning goal in the title game two years ago. Click here to listen to the interview with Coach Baldaccini; click here to listen to the interview with Caroline Carlin.
