DePauw and Trinity set to meet in SCAC Softball Championship

Game Three Recap - Trinity 2, Southwestern 1
Trinity’s Colbie Devost allowed just one hit and struck out seven to lead the Tigers to a 2-1 victory over Southwestern in the winner’s bracket of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Championship. Box Score

Trinity improved to 20-22 on the season and advanced to face the winner of the contest between Centre and DePauw. Southwestern dropped to 27-14 with the loss and is set to play Millsaps Saturday afternoon in the loser’s bracket.

The Tigers got on the board in the top of the third inning as Becca Rush knocked a double to left centerfield, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and scored an unearned run on a throwing error.

In the top of the fourth, Trinity’s Megan Russell led off with a double to centerfield. Kayleigh Kinlaw followed with a bunt for a base hit, and both runners advanced with stolen bases. Russell scored on a single to left by Brooke Sanchez to put the Tigers up, 2-0.

In the circle, Devost held Southwestern scoreless until Abigail O’Connor hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 2-1.

Still down one run in the bottom of the seventh, the Pirates had a base runner after Kayla Irvin drew a walk with one out. Kaylee Kucharski, the pinch runner, took second on a passed ball, but Southwestern was unable to advance her any further.

Trinity totaled four hits, with Sanchez tallying one hit and one RBI. O’Connor had the lone hit for Southwestern.

Devost improved to 13-11 after allowing just one run and striking out seven. Southwestern’s Lauren Zearfoss fell to 16-5 with the loss.

Game Four Recap - DePauw 9, Centre 0
DePauw, ranked 20th in Division III, scored two runs in the first, three in the second and four in the fourth to claim a 9-0 victory over Centre in the winner’s bracket of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Championship. Box Score

With the win, the Tigers improve to 24-7-1 on the season and advance to play Trinity later on Saturday. Centre falls to 14-22 with the loss and faces Rhodes in the loser’s bracket.

In the first, Rachel MacBeth led off with a single to right centerfield, moved to second on a passed ball and took third on a base hit by Brianne Weeks. Jen Kosinski followed with a double to right center, scoring both runners to put the Tigers up, 2-0.

The Tigers added two more runs on Weeks' first homer of the season in the second. Kosinski then doubled to right center and scored on a single by Emma Minx.

Centre had a baserunner in the top of the third after Regina Sena doubled down the left field line. However, the Colonels were unable to advance her any further, leaving the score at 5-0.

The Colonels had another chance in the top of the fourth with runners on first and second in, but a fielder’s choice prevented the team from plating any runs.

MacBeth led off the fourth with a base hit to right center and moved to second on Weeks' sacrifice bunt. Kosinski reached on a fielding error by the rightfielder with MacBeth scored on the play. Amy Hallett then delivered a three-run homer pushing DePauw's lead to 9-0. 

DePauw totaled 11 hits in the contest, with MacBeth, Weeks, Kosinski, Minx and Holly Paris posting two hits each. Hallett led the offense with three RBI. Sena, Chelsea Benham and Katie Martello had one hit each for Centre.

Emily Bichler earned the win for the Tigers, posting her sixth shutout of the season. She allowed three hits and struck out one batter in five innings of work, improving to 22-7. Emily Landherr took the loss for Centre, falling to 5-11 on the year.

Game Five Recap - Southwestern 8, Millsaps 0
Tessa Galloway tallied three hits including a fifth-inning home to lead Southwestern to an 8-0 victory over Millsaps in an elimination game of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Championship. Box Score

The Pirates improved to 28-14 and advanced to face the winner of the game between Rhodes and Centre. Meanwhile, Millsaps finished it season at 17-23.

Southwestern struck first in the bottom of the first inning, as Taylor Turpin scored on Kayla Irvin's base hit. The next inning, the Pirates scored three runs on five hits. Galloway led off with a double to right centerfield, and advanced to third on a single by Amanda Ambrose. Turpin followed with an infield single and along with Ambrose scored on Jacqueline Rosson’s single down the right field line to give Southwestern a 4-0 lead.

The Pirates added two more runs in the bottom of the third as Galloway recorded an RBI double and later scored on a passed ball. In the bottom of the fifth, Galloway collected her third hit of the game with a solo home run over the centerfield fence. The Pirates plated a run on a throwing error to seal the 8-0 victory.

The Pirates tallied 11 hits in the win, led by Galloway’s 3-for-3 performance. Turpin also added two hits, while Rosson and Galloway had two RBI each. Sam Wursteisen and Amanda Berry recorded the lone hits for Millsaps.

Zearfoss improved to 17-5, allowing two hits and striking out six in five innings of work. Lindsay Drane took the loss for Millsaps, falling to 5-5 on the season.

Game Six Recap - Centre 4, Rhodes 0
Centre scored all of its runs in the first two innings and Emily Meador tossed a four-hit shutout as the Colonels blanked Rhodes, 4-0, in an elimination game of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Championship. Box Score

Centre improved to 17-22 and faces Southwestern in another elimination game later today. The Lynx finished their season at 25-17.

The Colonels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Ashley Christian led off with a single, stole second and scored on Regina Sena’s homer to right center.  The Colonels added one more in the frame as Taylor Childress singled and later scored from third on an illegal pitch.

The Colonels added one more in the second Emily Meador singled and moved to second on an illegal pitch. After Emily Landherr singled Meador to third and Christian drove her in with a base hit.

Centre totaled eight hits led by Christian's two. Four different Rhodes players totaled one hit each.

Meador improved to 11-11 with the win, while Chelsea Peters dropped to 6-7.

Game Seven Recap - DePauw 4, Trinity 1
DePauw, ranked 20th in Division III, advanced to Sunday's title game of the 2011 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Championship after a 4-1 win over Trinity. DePauw improved to 25-7-1, while Trinity dropped to 18-23 and will play the winner of the Centre-Southwestern game. Box Score

DePauw took a 2-0 lead in the first as Rachel MacBeth and Brianne Weeks reached on errors and advanced a base on Jen Kosinski's sacrifice bunt. Emma Minx then delivered a two-run single. 

The Tigers added two more in the fourth as Kosinski walked and Minx drove her in with a double. Minx advanced to third on the throw and scored on Haley Buchanan's sacrifice fly to center.

Trinity reached the board in the bottom of the fourth as Karen MacPherson led off with a bunt single and moved to second on Kayleigh Kinlaw's sacrifice bunt. Brooke Sanchez followed with a run-scoring single.

DePauw totaled five hits led by Minx and Cymone Allen with two each. Minx drove in three of the Tigers' four runs. Becca Rush paced Trinity with two of its six hits.

Emily Bichler improved to 23-7 with the win after not allowing a walk over seven innings, while Colbie Devost dropped to 13-12.

Game Eight Recap - Southwestern 11, Centre 5
Southwestern scored six runs in the first inning and stayed alive in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Championship with an 11-5 win over Centre in an elimination game. Box Score

The Pirates improved to 29-14 and advanced in the loser's bracket where they'll face Trinity in another elimination game tonight. Centre finished its season at 17-23.

Southwestern's Taylor Turpin led off the game with an infield single and moved to second on Jacqueline Rosson’s sacrifice bunt. Kaitlyn Pavlicek followed with an RBI single to right center. After Haley Hughes reached on a fielder’s choice, Kayla Irvin delivered a two-run homer to left.

Karen Ramirez then reached on a walk and Tessa Galloway on an error. Ramirez scored on Abigail O’Connor’s single to right center before Amanda Ambrose reached on an outfield error which allowed Galloway and O’Connor to score making it 6-0.

The Pirates added one more in the fifth as Ramirez led off with a walk and Galloway followed with a bunt single. Both advanced on Ambrose's grounder and Ramirez came home on Turpin's bunt single in front of home plate.

Hughes walked in the sixth and Irvin followed with her second homer of the day to extend the lead to 9-0.

Centre kept the game alive with three in the sixth as Ashley Christian led off with a single and scored on Taylor Childress' double. Chelsea Benham reached on an error which allowed Christian to score. Benham stole second and moved to third on an error before scoring on Katie Martello's infield single.

The Pirates added two more in the seventh as Turpin led off with an infield hit and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Pavlicek singled, Irvin and Ramirez each hit run-scoring singles to push the lead to 11-3.

Centre countered in the seventh as Sara Hall had a pinch-hit single. Nicole Webb entered as a pinch-runner and moved to second on Christian's single. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Regina Sena's single.

Southwestern totaled 15 hits with Turpin and Irvin leading the way with three each followed by Galloway, Pavlicek and O'Connor with two each. Irvin led the Pirates with four RBI. Martello and Christian each had two of Centre's seven hits.

Lyndsy Maus improved to 11-8 with the win, while Emily Meador dropped to 11-12.

Game Nine Recap - Trinity 7, Southwestern 1
Trinity advanced to the finals of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Championship for the first time since 2007 following a 7-1 win over Southwestern in a game played tonight at Greencastle High School. Box Score

The win was the Tigers' second over the Pirates on the day and propelled them to Sunday's 11 a.m. matchup with DePauw. Trinity dropped a 4-1 decision to DePauw earlier on Saturday and will need to defeat the host Tigers twice to claim the SCAC title.

With tonight's win, Trinity improved to 21-23, while Southwestern finished its season at 29-15.

The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the first as Taylor Turpin and Jacqueline Rosson each reached on bunt singles and advanced a base on a wild pitch. Turpin scored from third on Kaitlyn Pavlicek's sacrifice bunt.

Trinity scored two in the bottom of the opening frame as Karen MacPherson reached on a bunt single before Megan Russell homered to left center.

The Tigers added to the lead in the third with Brooke Sanchez singling and stealing second. Chrissy Armstrong singled to the pitcher and Sanchez scored when Armstrong was caught stealing.

Trinity's Kayleigh Kinlaw reached on a walk in the fifth and pinch-runner Alyssa Gutierrez moved to third on Sanchez's infield hit and a wide throw to first. Armstrong's grounder plated Gutierrez and gave Trinity a 4-1 lead.

Three more Trinity runners crossed the plate in the sixth as pinch-hitter Teresa Greppi singled to left center and later scored on Russell's base hit. Kinlaw and Sanchez then followed with RBI infield singles.

Sanchez totaled three of Trinity's 12 hits, while MacPherson, Russell and Kinlaw each added two. The Pirates totaled six hits with Turpin and Tessa Galloway each finishing with two. 

Sydney Friday improved to 8-11 with the relief win and allowed just one hit in 4 2/3 innings. Lauren Zearfoss dropped to 17-6 with the loss.
