Ward scored a career-high 19 points and dished out six assists to lead the Pirates to a win over Colorado College as home last Friday. The first-year point guard shot 4-for-10 from deep, hitting a pair of clutch 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and icing the game with a pair of free throws. She also six rebound and forced one steal in the SCAC opener for Southwestern. The Pirates have now won three-straight contests and picked up an SCAC opening victory for the first time since the 2018-19 campaign .
First-year forward Sarah Putnicki of Austin College had a huge weekend for the ‘Roos, coming just short of averaging a double-double with 15.5 points and 9.5 rebounds-per-game, while also dishing out 3.0 assists and adding 3.0 blocks-per-game, including a 17-point effort in a win over Dallas. Sophomore guard Audrey Bayston of Colorado College poured in a career-high 38 points, but the Tigers’s dropped an 83-82 result to Texas Lutheran last Saturday. She completed her first double-double of the season and the second of her career with 11 rebounds. In Friday’s 71-68 loss at Southwestern, Bayston scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Senior guard Jayla Santa Maria of Texas Lutheran was critical part of the Bulldogs come from behind 83-82 victory over Colorado College, scoring 15 points in the second half including two clutch free throws to secure the victory. Senior center Kelly Simmons of Trinity led the Tiger women's basketball team to a pair of road wins to open SCAC play over the weekend, defeating both Austin College and Centenary. Simmons averaged 9.0 points and 13.0 rebounds per game over the weekend, setting new career-highs in rebounds in both games. She opened with a career-best 12 boards against Austin College, then capped the weekend with her second double-double of the season - collecting 14 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Centenary. Simmons notched her double-double by halftime, helping the Tigers keep the game close in the first two quarters, and setting up a game-clinching 35-point third quarter.
