Austin Smith, Southwestern University, Pitcher of the Week (Week 5)

AUSTIN SMITH OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior pitcher from Cedar Park, Texas, has been named the SCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played from Monday, March 2 through Sunday, March 8.

Smith threw five scoreless, no-hit innings with 10 strikeouts and only three walks in the Pirates 3-2 win over Middlebury. Smith opened the game by striking out three of the first four batters he faced. He struck out the side in the third and fourth innings and the defense backed him up in the fifth, turning a 4-6-3 double play after Smith walked the leadoff batter, then closing the inning with a groundout to shortstop.

Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
Freshman Jason Brown of St. Thomas lowered his team-leading ERA to 1.84 after allowing just one earned run in his first appearance as a starting pitcher. Sophomore Joe Burch of Texas Lutheran tossed six shutout innings in a 6-0 win over New Jersey City. Pre-determined to go only six innings, Burch allowed just three hits and struck out six. Freshman Graeme Williams of Dallas threw 3.2 innings of relief and did not allow an earned run to No. 2 Cal Lutheran University.
