Iris Montero, Schreiner University, Women's Tennis

IRIS MONTERO OF SCHREINER UNIVERSITY, a senior on the women's tennis team from New Braunfels, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning March 9.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.



Montero is an Exercise Science major and a member of the Schreiner Women’s Tennis program, where she’s had a vital role for the Mountaineers the past three seasons.   

Along with her efforts on the court, Iris has also made several contributions off it. Since arriving to Kerrville, she has been involved on campus by serving in many different roles with several organizations such as the Schreiner Honors program, the Catholic Student Ministry, the Schreiner Student Activities Board (SAB), Delta Phi Epsilon, Organization of Latino Engagement, Mountaineer Mentor, and Schreiner Learning Support Services. 

In these various sevice roles, Iris has been an active leader and mentor by serving as an officer in many of the groups listed above.  

In adddtion, she has helped lead fundraising efforts for those with Cystic Fibrosis and has traveled to Oklahoma and New Orleans to help those in need after disasters have occurred.  

Iris also assists students on campus that may have learning disabilities through her work with the LSS program on campus, and as a Mountaineer Mentor, she has helped assist first year students who are making the transition into collegiate life at Schreiner.
