ROBERTO ROIG-PEREZ of CENTENARY COLLEGE, a senior on the Gents swimming team, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning March 19, 2018.

The SCAC honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Roig-Perez, majoring in communications with a concentration in new media, has been very involved in both the community and here at Centenary. Personally, he has helped with local food banks – whether it be in the local community with his fraternity, Theta Chi, or in his hometown of San Antonio.

He also is a member of the Centenary choir, which has sung for numerous local service clubs, Louisiana churches, and even toured internationally. He and the rest of the choir have participated in the annual spring “Big Event,” which does community service projects in the Shreveport community, with an emphasis on neighborhoods around Centenary College.

Finally, he and the rest of the swim team assist with the teardown of the Book Bazaar, specifically helping to pack up unsold books after the annual September even that is held in the Gold Dome. The Book Bazaar has helped raise more than a million dollars for Centenary in its more than 30 years of existence.

In the pool, he has been a part of three relay teams that have finished All-Conference: the 2018 400 medley relay team and the 2017 200 and 400 medley relay teams. At the 2016 SCAC Championships, he turned in the eighth fastest time in school history in the 200 butterfly (1:57.31).
